Description
Julian Ichigi, also known as Julian Ainsworth, is the central antagonist of the Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya series, serving as the current head of the Ainsworth family. His background is defined by the looming extinction of his world, a crisis that drives his every action. To avert this catastrophe, the Ainsworth family sought to create a new Holy Grail. After countless failures, they succeeded with a girl named Miyu Edelfelt, who was subsequently captured and designated as the necessary sacrifice for the family's ritual to save humanity. Julian, originally destined to be a vessel for the family's ancestor, Darius Ainsworth, was forced into this role at a young age, leading to Darius's consciousness fusing with his own. This process inflicted immense psychological and physical strain, and for a long time, Julian hid his true identity by masking himself with Darius's appearance and persona.
Before these events consumed his life, Julian led a very different existence as a student in a parallel world, where he went by the name Julian Ichigi and served as the student council president. During this time, he had a casual and somewhat irritable friendship with Shirou Emiya, often snapping at him but also sharing moments of genuine interaction, such as discussing the nature of lies versus fakery. This peaceful period ended when Julian discovered that Shirou had been hiding Miyu, shattering their bond and accelerating Julian's descent into the cold and vengeful figure he becomes.
Julian's personality is a complex and unstable mixture of his original self and the overwhelming influence of Darius. He perceives the world as a stage and the events unfolding as his own personal legend or mythology, a narrative whose conclusion he believes is already determined. He is obsessed with dramatic staging and views the people around him, including his enemies like Illyasviel von Einzbern, as players in his performance. While he can be calm and even doting towards his younger foster sister, Erika, whom he insists is his only family and ally, this demeanor can instantly transform into manic, hysterical rage when his "legend" is threatened. He is deeply angered by being called a "fake" or a "counterfeit," a label that cuts to the core of his identity crisis, and he harbors a particular hatred for Shirou Emiya, whom he believes has no role or right to interfere in his myth.
Julian's primary motivation is a twisted form of heroism; he aims to save his dying world by any means necessary, a philosophy that Shirou directly compares to being a "Champion of Justice" who is willing to sacrifice one person for the greater good. This goal requires the sacrifice of Miyu as the Holy Grail, and he is ruthless in ensuring her compliance. He regularly extracts her blood to inscribe magical tablets for his ritual, threatening to harm her captured brother, Shirou, as a means of control. He also employs psychological manipulation, projecting mental images of her friends' desperate battles to crush her hope and make her despair, believing her suffering is a necessary ingredient for humanity's salvation.
In the story, Julian operates from a castle displaced in space using his magecraft. Initially appearing under the guise of Darius, he confronts Illya and her allies when they attempt to rescue Miyu. A pivotal moment occurs when Illya uses the Noble Phantasm Rule Breaker on him, which dispels the illusion of Darius and exposes Julian's true form for the first time. Humiliated and enraged, he retaliates by summoning a massive cube that unleashes a horde of corrupted Heroic Spirits upon the city, attempting to force Miyu to return to him willingly by threatening global despair.
Key to understanding Julian is his relationship with Erika Ainsworth, his foster sister. He isolates her by claiming she can trust no one but him, acting as both her brother and father. He is fiercely protective of her yet also punishes her harshly for disobedience, revealing the controlling nature of their bond. His relationship with Shirou Emiya is one of former friendship turned to bitter enmity, with Julian viewing Shirou's rescue of Miyu as a personal betrayal and an intrusion on his legend.
Throughout the narrative, Julian shows little to no development away from his goals. Instead, his character is progressively revealed, shifting from a seemingly calm mastermind to a more desperate and unstable individual as his plans are thwarted. His defeat and his reaction to it are central to the climax, forcing him to confront the failure of his "predetermined" legend.
As a mage, Julian is exceptionally powerful. He is a master of Flash Air, a form of spatial displacement that allows him to teleport, connect distant locations, displace entire structures like his castle, even reach into a person's body to grip their heart. He can also project his voice and consciousness across vast distances. Physically, he is formidable enough to block a strike from a Holy Sword with his bare hand by reinforcing his body. As the "Rule Master" of the Holy Grail War, he possesses the unique authority to create and destroy Class Cards with a gesture. He is also in possession of the Pandora Class Card, which contains Pandora's Box.
