Description
Yūma Kuga originates from the Neighborhood, a parallel dimension. Chronologically fifteen, his physical growth halted at eleven when trion energy replaced his biological body, preserving a youthful appearance at 141 cm with white hair and red eyes. He typically wears a Japanese high school uniform—blue jacket and gray trousers—but favors casual attire: a purple hoodie with a paw print and "UMA" acronym paired with beige baggy jeans, referencing the homophone of his Japanese name. His trion battle uniforms differ by rank; C-Rank features all-black with white-gray stripes, while B-Rank mirrors standard Border uniforms with symmetrical sleeves, no shoulder guards, and Tamakoma insignias.

Personality-wise, Yūma displays a laid-back demeanor but lacks familiarity with Japanese social customs, occasionally causing friction. In combat, he prioritizes survival over heroism with logical decisions. Despite his cheerful exterior, he harbors deep guilt and depression over his father’s sacrificial death, initially seeking to resurrect him. After forming Tamakoma-2 with Osamu Mikumo and Chika Amatori, he shifted focus to supporting Osamu’s goals. His Side Effect detects lies, provoking blunt responses to deception.

Yūma gained extensive combat experience in the Neighborhood under six years of rigorous training from his father, Yūgo Kuga. Yūgo sacrificed himself to forge a Black Trigger within a ring, sustaining Yūma’s trion body and binding him to the autonomous advisor Replica. Yūma later fought three years with the mercenary group Calvaria before traveling to Earth at Replica’s suggestion to seek Border’s aid.

In Mikado City, he enrolled in school and encountered Osamu during a Neighbor attack, joining Border’s Tamakoma Branch as C-Rank. Nicknamed "C-Rank White Devil" and "White Nightmare" for his white hair and prowess, he rose to B-Rank as Tamakoma-2’s primary Attacker. Opponents dubbed him "Cougar" during rank wars.

His combat skills stem from battlefield experience and triggers. His Black Trigger merges with Replica for seal-based techniques: Boost (strength/attack multipliers), Bound (repulsive force), Bolt (trion projectiles), Shield (barriers), Anchor (immobilizing weights), Chain (movement restriction), Gate (trion soldier summons), and Echo (seismic vibrations). He combines seals for complex effects like Anchor-enhanced projectiles (Anchor + Bolt Quadra). As a Border agent, he wields Scorpion for shape-shifting blades (including Mole Claw and Branch Blade), Grasshopper for mobility, and Shield.

Tactically, he excels in rapid trigger switching, aerial combat, and environmental strategy. Trained by Border’s No. 3 Attacker Kirie Konami, he holds competitive win ratios against elite attackers like Kō Murakami (38.8%) and Masato Kageura (47.6%) without combat Side Effects. Observers note his efficient, emotionless style.

Notable trivia: "Yūma" means "play" and "genuine"; "Kuga" blends "sky" and "leisure." He habitually makes duckfaces, dislikes honorifics like "senpai," enjoys Japanese cuisine, requires no sleep, and ranked second in Border’s first popularity poll.
