Description
Chi-chan is a small, round, yellow creature and the central character of PriPri Chi-chan!!. He belongs to a race of beings known as underground-dwellers, originating from a world beneath the Earth's surface. Physically, Chi-chan is very small, roughly the size of a prize one might win from a crane game, and his body is round in shape.

His journey to the human world began with a simple and endearing motivation: a quest for sweets. Drawn to the surface by a desire for candy, Chi-chan managed to travel to the human realm. However, upon satisfying his sweet tooth and attempting to return to his underground home, he became stuck in the exit hole he had used. He was discovered and rescued by a kind-hearted middle school girl named Yuka Saeki, who dug him free and subsequently took him into her home.

Initially, Chi-chan was deeply afraid of humans. He harbored a suspicion that if he were ever captured by them, he would be subjected to dissection or other scientific experiments. This fear colored his early perceptions of the surface world. His encounter with Yuka, who treated him with nothing but gentleness and care, directly challenged this prejudice. As he began living with Yuka, his entire judgment of humans changed, allowing him to form strong bonds and live comfortably on the surface.

Within the story, Chi-chan's primary role is that of a new friend and a source of wonder for the human characters, particularly Yuka. His presence introduces the existence of the underground world and leads to interactions with other beings, including fellow underground-dwellers and even aliens. He is the catalyst for much of the series' gentle comedy and heartwarming situations.

A distinctive trait of Chi-chan is his manner of speaking. He has a verbal tic, ending his sentences with the suffix -dechi. Because the original names of underground-dwellers are unintelligible to humans, Yuka gave him the nickname Chi-chan. This name is derived from chiteijin, the Japanese word for underground-dweller.

Chi-chan develops several key relationships over the course of the series. His most important bond is with his rescuer and caretaker, Yuka Saeki. He also becomes friends with her human acquaintances, including Yamato Suou, a boy in Yuka's class, and Yamato's younger sister, Akari. Another significant figure is Joe-kun, a green, round underground-dweller who is Chi-chan's friend. Joe-kun came to the human world specifically searching for Chi-chan after he went missing. Later, other family members appear, including Chi-chan's father, who notably wears a silk hat and a mustache, and his mother, who is often seen in an apron and skirt.

In terms of character development, Chi-chan's most pronounced change is his transition from fear and suspicion of humanity to a state of trust and friendship. His initial motivations are simple and self-centered, focusing on acquiring sweets. Over time, his motivations evolve to include maintaining his new relationships and adapting to life in a world very different from his underground home. While not possessing overt magical powers or superhuman strength, Chi-chan's notable abilities include his small size, which allows him to hide and explore unnoticed, as well as his inherent connection to the underground world, which is the origin of the series' central mystery.
