Description
Eto, also known as the One-Eyed Owl, is a central figure in Tokyo Ghoul:re whose actions and ideology fundamentally shape the course of the story. She is a natural one-eyed ghoul, the offspring of the ghoul Yoshimura and a human woman named Ukina. Her mother was killed by the organization V, after which her father entrusted her to the care of another ghoul named Noro. Abandoned and forced to survive in the harsh environment of the 24th ward from a young age, she grew to despise the world, an experience that forged her into a bloodthirsty and sadistic individual. By the age of fourteen, she had already attained the highest threat ranking of SSS, becoming one of the most powerful ghouls in history and later a founding executive of Aogiri Tree, the largest militant ghoul organization in Japan.
Her personality is complex and multifaceted, largely defined by her dual identities. As a ghoul and the leader of Aogiri Tree, Eto is playful, deranged, and rarely takes things seriously, often expressing joy at the suffering of others. She is a skilled strategist who manipulates people to fulfill her orders, demonstrating a sharp intuition for the feelings and desires of those around her. In stark contrast, her human persona is Sen Takatsuki, a best-selling and critically acclaimed horror novelist. As Sen, she often appears sleepy, curious, and modestly dressed, to the point of being disheveled. However, her literary works are filled with despair and hatred for the world, revealing the true darkness within her.
Eto's primary motivation is the creation of a world where ghouls are no longer hunted and persecuted for their existence, and she is willing to sacrifice anything to achieve this ambition. To this end, she orchestrated a grand, multi-layered plan to overthrow the Commission of Counter Ghoul and the corrupt Washuu clan that secretly controlled it. Her final novel as Sen Takatsuki was deliberately written to expose the Washuu clan's deep-seated conspiracy with ghouls, inciting public upheaval and turning the world against the CCG as part of her strategy. Her interest in Ken Kaneki is a crucial element of her role, stemming from their shared nature as one-eyed ghouls. She saw him as a kindred spirit and a vital piece in her plan, deliberately provoking him to awaken his suppressed ghoul identity, believing he could become the "One-Eyed King" who would unite ghouls and lead them to freedom.
Her key relationships define her role in the narrative. Her father, Yoshimura, abandoned her to protect her, a decision that left her with deep emotional scars. She is responsible for her caretaker, Noro, who remains fiercely loyal to her. Her most significant relationship is with Ken Kaneki. She confronts him to force the re-emergence of his original violent personality, and during their rooftop battle, she confesses her love for him, acknowledging him as the one she was waiting for. She also works in secret collaboration with Kishou Arima, her greatest nemesis and the CCG's strongest investigator, to destroy the very system they both served.
Throughout Tokyo Ghoul:re, Eto develops from a shadowy mastermind into a more directly involved and vulnerable figure. She publicly reveals her identity as a ghoul and her role as the One-Eyed Owl, surrendering to Kaneki to set his plan in motion. In a major development, she is eventually defeated and captured by Kichimura Washuu, after which her body is used as the core component of a massive weapon called the Taxidermied Owl. She later manages to regain control of her body, though her ultimate fate remains uncertain.
As a fighter, Eto is the most powerful ghoul in the series, possessing an SSS rating. She is an Ukaku-type ghoul, wielding a kagune that manifests in a plumage-like form, allowing her to fire devastating crystal shards over long distances and form massive, blade-like structures. She is also a kakuja user, having cannibalized other ghouls to evolve her kagune into a monstrous, full-body armor that greatly enhances her strength, speed, and regenerative abilities. She possesses superhuman physical capabilities, easily dispatching entire teams of elite CCG investigators and has only ever been truly overwhelmed by Kishou Arima in combat. Furthermore, she has the rare ability to bestow a fragment of her own kagune, known as a "bone," onto other ghouls, granting them immense increases in strength and abnormal regenerative powers, as seen when she empowered Kanae.
