Description
Keith Aero Windermere is a central character from the Macross Delta film, Passionate Walküre. He is a nineteen-year-old ace pilot hailing from the Kingdom of Windermere, where he serves as a member of the elite Aerial Knights. As the illegitimate son of King Gramia VI, he is the half-brother of the young king, Heinz Nehrich Windermere. Despite having royal blood, his status as a child of a concubine meant he forwent any claim to the throne, instead choosing to dedicate his life as a knight and protector to his younger brother. He holds the distinguished title of White Knight of Derwent, a designation given to the most exemplary warrior within the Aerial Knights.
Keith is characterized by a profound sense of chivalry and a calm, aloof demeanor that sets him apart from others. He is incredibly proud and fiercely loyal, viewing himself as the guardian of his ailing half-brother, Heinz, a duty he swore to uphold. A natural-born warrior, he possesses a deep-seated love for challenging combat and finds great satisfaction in facing talented adversaries. Despite his loyalty to the Windermerean monarchy, he is not a blind fanatic. He is a man of principle who grows increasingly skeptical of the actions of Roid Brehm, his childhood friend and the kingdom's chancellor, as their war efforts become more extreme.
As a member of the Aerial Knights, Keith's primary role in the story is as a formidable antagonist to the Delta Flight pilots and the tactical sound unit Walküre. He is arguably the most skilled pilot on his side, often leading sorties against the protagonists. His primary motivation is to protect Windermere and his brother, Heinz, whose ability to sing the Song of the Wind is a crucial component of the kingdom's strategy. He believes in Windermere's cause for independence and revenge against the New United Nations Government, but his sense of honor dictates his actions on the battlefield.
His most significant relationship is with Roid Brehm, his comrade from childhood. They trained together and fought side-by-side in Windermere's war for independence, sharing a mutual hatred for the N.U.N.S. forces that devastated their people. However, as Roid becomes increasingly consumed by a plan for galactic conquest using the ancient Protoculture ruins, Keith's trust in him erodes. He ultimately sees Roid as a manipulator who is exploiting and endangering King Heinz, leading to a final, fatal confrontation between them. On the battlefield, Keith develops a fierce rivalry with Messer Ihlefeld of Chaos, recognizing him as a worthy opponent. Their intense dogfights are a highlight of the film, culminating in a deadly conclusion. After Messer's death, Keith takes notice of Hayate Imelmann, who adopts Messer's fighting style. Their rivalry results in Keith being shot down and suffering a grievous injury to his right eye.
Throughout the film, Keith undergoes a significant development from a loyal soldier of Windermere to a disillusioned warrior who must decide where his true allegiance lies. Horrified by the toll that continuous singing takes on his brother's body and the devastating consequences of Roid's schemes, he turns against his former allies. In the final battle, Keith defects and joins forces with Delta Flight and Walküre to stop Roid, sacrificing himself to ensure the mad plan fails.
Keith's abilities as a pilot are extraordinary. He flies a custom Sv-262Hs Draken III variable fighter, a machine typically depicted in black but associated with his White Knight title. His piloting skill is matched by few, and he is also a highly proficient swordsman, able to hold his own in close-quarters combat. A unique trait among his people is his sensitivity to fold waves, which manifests as a spiritual connection to the wind. Notably, after being shot down and losing his right eye, his remaining senses, particularly his ability to perceive and feel the "wind" or fold waves, become incredibly sharp, paradoxically elevating his piloting abilities to an even higher level.
