Description
Konju is a minstrel and songstress who lives and works in the community Hakumei and Mikochi call home. She earns her living as a traveling performer, often singing and playing a lyre in bars, at concerts, and on the streets. Konju is coquettish and takes great pride in her musical talent, never hesitating to perform when the chance arises. Beyond music, she enjoys refined pastimes such as making scented soaps and beautifully wrapping objects. Konju first becomes prominent in the story when a local singing contest results in her being tied for first place with Mikochi, who did not even enter but received votes due to her widespread popularity. This initially frustrates Konju, who sees Mikochi as an unearned rival. The conflict resolves when Konju develops a sore throat and Mikochi brings her a household remedy. Touched by this act of kindness, Konju abandons her jealousy, and the two songstresses form a close friendship. They grow closer by exchanging skills: Konju teaches Mikochi how to make soaps, and she learns from Mikochi how to bake honey waffles. Their bond solidifies when they perform a duet at the harvest festival, their voices meshing together so perfectly that they enchant the surrounding objects into an animated dance. Through her connection with Mikochi, Konju develops from a proud and competitive artist into a sincerely supportive friend. Her distinctive singing voice, elegant sense of style, and creative hobbies make her a distinctive and valued presence in the tiny forest community.
