Description
Ayumi Takahara is a seventeen-year-old student at Maijima Private High School, attending class 2-B alongside her classmate Keima Katsuragi. She is a dedicated member of the school's track and field team, where she specializes in hurdles and is renowned as the star runner, quite possibly the fastest student in the entire school. Her dedication to athletics has earned her the nickname of the school's non-guided missile, a reference to her incredible speed and her tendency to run at full sprint through the hallways, often colliding with walls or other people because she cannot stop in time.
In terms of personality, Ayumi is defined by her vibrant cheerfulness and energetic nature. She is outgoing, competitive, and has a bold, straightforward demeanor, not hesitating to speak her mind. Despite this confident exterior, she struggles with deep-seated insecurities and a lack of self-assurance. Her emotional vulnerability is most evident in relation to her athletic career; she was burdened by the pressure from jealous upperclassmen and her own self-doubt after being chosen as a representative for an upcoming meet. This internal conflict created a void in her heart that made her susceptible to outside influence.
Her primary motivation is her love for running, which she genuinely enjoys. However, she also fears failure and the expectations placed upon her, leading her to consider feigning an injury to avoid a competition she did not feel ready for. Beyond athletics, she enjoys watching comedy television programs and eating, but dislikes warming up, muscle training, and spicy food. She has a notable habit of tying her hair back whenever she is about to run seriously. Ayumi has also mentioned that her recent challenges include the ironic hindrance of her breast size increasing, which she feels impedes her running ability.
In the specific story of The World God Only Knows: Four Girls and an Idol, Ayumi is one of the four titular girls forming a light music band. She is a member of the band named 2-B Pencils, which was started by her friend Chihiro Kosaka, and in this group, Ayumi plays the guitar. This role highlights her involvement in the school's social and extracurricular life outside of the track team.
Ayumi shares key relationships with several characters. She is good friends with Elsie, a demon, as well as her bandmates Chihiro Kosaka and Miyako Terada. Her friendship with Chihiro is particularly strong, and she has shown a desire to support and help her. Her relationship with Keima is complex and central to her development. Initially, she finds him odd, but she ultimately falls in love with him during a conquest to expel a runaway spirit from her heart. Even after her memories of the event are supposedly erased, she retains lingering feelings, often blushing around Keima or becoming flustered and jealous, sometimes resorting to kicking him violently.
Throughout the larger narrative, Ayumi undergoes significant development. She is the first girl Keima ever conquers, setting the stage for his real-world interactions. Later, she is revealed to be a crucial character as the host of the goddess Mercury, making her one of the key figures in a major conflict. This revelation requires her heart to be reconquered, a much more emotionally complex process where her lingering memories and distrust make her resistant to Keima's advances. Through these experiences, she demonstrates maturity, loyalty, and a willingness to face her problems head-on rather than running away from them. Her notable ability is her extraordinary speed and agility as a runner, which is her defining trait and the source of both her pride and her personal struggles.
