OVA
Description
Date Seiji, known in some adaptations as Sage of the Halo or Sage Date, is one of the central warriors in the Ronin Warriors series, including the OVA Legend of the Inferno Armor. Hailing from Miyagi Prefecture, he was born on June 9, 1973, as a descendant of the famous general Date Masamune. His upbringing was deeply rooted in tradition, as he was raised primarily by his grandfather, who trained him as a Bushi warrior following the strict etiquettes of the Eido period. Both of his parents are alive; his mother works as an emergency room doctor, and his father is a police officer who practices kendo. He has two sisters: an older sister named Yayoi, whose childhood teasing instilled in him a lasting difficulty speaking with girls, and a younger sister named Satsuki, who has a more relaxed and casual demeanor than the rest of her family.
Physically, Seiji is recognized by his wild blonde hair which often covers one of his pale purple eyes, a stylistic choice influenced by both family legend and childhood experiences. His height during the main series is 167 cm, but by the events of Message he has grown to 175 cm. In the Legend of the Inferno Armor OVA, his civilian attire consists of a light-colored dress shirt with a teal handkerchief tucked into the pocket, tan pants, and brown shoes.
Seiji is widely regarded as the most mature and composed member of the Ronin Warriors. He is highly proper, speaks using formal Japanese, and absolutely despises lies and evil. He typically maintains a calm and controlled exterior, preferring to observe situations carefully and think through a strategy rather than charging impulsively into battle. However, if he is pushed far enough, he is capable of being driven into a near-blind rage. His disciplined nature was cultivated by his grandfather through the study of bonsai and the bamboo flute, which were meant to temper a rebellious streak he had as a child. Despite his serious demeanor, he does act more relaxed and playful when around his fellow warriors. Among his interests are kendo, avant-garde bonsai, Formula 1 racing, and cycling. He remains uncomfortable around women due to his sister's influence, and he is often unsettled by the presence of non-combatants like Mia and Yuli, as he feels their involvement places them in great danger.
The Date clan has passed down the legend of a mystical armor for generations. Seiji discovered the Armor of Halo, also known as Korin, in his family's basement as a punishment for a breach of etiquette during a junior high kendo tournament. When an opponent cheated by throwing something into his eyes, an enraged Seiji knocked off the opponent's mask, leading to his disqualification. While confined to the basement by his grandfather, he found the armor that would choose him as its bearer. The Halo Armor embodies the virtue of Rei, which translates to Grace, Courtesy, or Wisdom, and holds an elemental affinity for light. It has the ability to draw power from any light source and can pierce through illusions to reveal the truth.
In battle, Seiji wields the Korin Ken, a nodachi (a Japanese broadsword) that features a shuriken at its hilt, which he can hang on his back. As a master swordsman, he is capable of wielding this blade with one or two hands. His signature special attack is the Rai Ko Zan, known in various adaptations as the Thunderbolt Cut or Lightning Strike. This technique allows him to release a concentrated slash of light energy from his blade, which can manifest as a single powerful projectile or a sweeping beam. Beyond its offensive capabilities, his sword and armor also possess restorative properties, which he notably demonstrated when he used his light to restore Ryo Sanada's blinded eyesight.
Within the group of Ronin Warriors, Seiji shares several key relationships. He is fiercely devoted to Ryo of the Wildfire, often positioning himself as a protector and showing deep empathy for the burdens Ryo carries as the team leader. He shares a particularly close friendship with Rowen of the Strata; the two are often paired together on missions or reconnaissance and share living quarters at Mia's home. He maintains a good friendship with Cye of the Torrent, as they both share a tendency to think things through in difficult situations. With Kento of Hardrock, he has a bickering but friendly relationship, often calling out Kento's impulsive behavior while still having his back in battle. Among the enemy Warlords, Kale is considered his primary rival, serving as an elemental opposite to Seiji's light and employing tactics that Seiji despises.
Throughout the Legend of the Inferno Armor storyline, Seiji continues to demonstrate his analytical nature and deep connection to his armor. During the events of this OVA, Seiji and Ryo are captured while investigating disturbances related to the armors. His role in this arc involves recognizing the growing corruption affecting the mystical armors, a concern that is later validated by Cye. His development throughout the series, including these OVAs, follows a path from a rigid traditionalist to a tempered leader who must balance his ancestral codes with the modern crises he faces, wrestling with themes of control, identity, and the weight of the light he wields.
