Description
Gentoku Ryuubi is a central character in the anime Ikki Tousen: Dragon Destiny, serving as the young leader of Seito Academy. She is the successor to the historical figure Liu Bei and holds the title of the Little Vessel. In the anime, she is eighteen years old. Physically, Gentoku is notable for her buxom figure, green eyes, and long brown hair that is almost always styled into two distinct ponytails. She frequently wears a pair of glasses and the standard uniform of Seito Academy. Her twin ponytails are a symbolic design choice, representing Liu Bei's twin swords, while her prominent chest is a reference to his large ears.

In terms of personality, Gentoku initially appears ill-suited for her role as a leader. She is portrayed as having poor fighting skills, lacking strategic intelligence, and showing minimal understanding of the duties that come with her position. Despite these shortcomings, she is deeply kind, gentle, and caring, which earns her genuine admiration from her peers. She is a passionate bookworm who often expresses more interest in reading than in the martial conflicts that define the world of Toushi. Her gentle nature, however, is not a sign of passivity. She deeply prioritizes the safety of her friends and subordinates, often physically interposing herself in dangerous situations to protect them, even when her own combat abilities are clearly insufficient.

Gentoku's central conflict in the story stems from the power that lies dormant within her. She possesses a destructive entity known as Rairyuu, the Lightning Dragon, which manifests as a superpowered and sadistic alter ego. When this dragon awakens, her personality completely inverts; she becomes merciless, violent, and attacks both allies and enemies indiscriminately, often with a smile on her face. This transformation is triggered during a siege on Seito Academy by rival forces from Kyosho Academy, activated by Shimei Ryomou's use of the Dragon Jade. After this incident, the loss of control forces her companions to imprison her in the school's basement until the violent episode subsides.

Gentoku's primary motivation for growth emerges when her loyal friend and guardian, Unchou Kanu, is captured by the villainous Sousou Moutoku of Kyosho Academy. The kidnapping of Kanu forces Gentoku to take her leadership responsibilities seriously for the first time. She decides to form an alliance with Nanyo Academy to mount a rescue mission, demonstrating her commitment to her friend over her own desire for a peaceful, bookish life. Her role in Dragon Destiny's final battle is crucial. Although her dragon form is no match for Sousou's power, she joins forces with Hakufu Sonsaku. By combining their respective dragon elements of water and thunder, they are able to defeat the main antagonist, and this event allows Gentoku to gain partial mastery over her own dragon.

Gentoku’s most significant relationship is with her closest friend and subordinate, Unchou Kanu. Kanu is fiercely protective of Gentoku and harbors deep, unreciprocated romantic feelings for her. Gentoku, however, is largely oblivious to the romantic nature of Kanu's affection. She frequently misinterprets Kanu’s intense protectiveness as being frightening or embarrassing. Their relationship is further explored in the sequel series Great Guardians, where Gentoku is possessed by the strategist Genpou Saji. In this state, she becomes a puppet used to manipulate Seito's fighters. Kanu ultimately frees her by bravely enduring a near-fatal blow from Gentoku, an act that leads to a heartfelt reconciliation where Gentoku expresses her deep appreciation by saying she wants to give her favorite book to her favorite person. Gentoku also has a close friendship with Ekitoku Chouhi, who often tries to train her, and is considered a trustworthy sovereign by the strategist Koumei Shokatsuryou.

Gentoku’s development throughout Dragon Destiny and subsequent series shows a clear arc from a passive, unmotivated girl to a more decisive leader. While she remains clumsy and kind-hearted, she becomes more willing to make difficult decisions and command others in times of crisis. Her journey is one of learning to control the immense, violent power inside her without losing her essential gentleness. In later storylines like Xtreme Xecutor, she continues to pursue greater responsibility, including rescuing and sheltering other fighters at Seito Academy, underscoring her enduring compassion and her gradual growth into a true leader.

Regarding notable abilities, Gentoku is classified as an E-Rank Toushi, meaning her baseline combat abilities are very poor. She is not a skilled fighter and prefers non-violent solutions, often relying on her allies in direct confrontations. Her only true power comes from her dragon, Rairyuu. This dragon is a destructive force of lightning and is considered the weakest of the three main dragons in the series, yet it is still immensely powerful and uncontrollable. Her primary development as a fighter involves learning to summon and control fragments of this dragon's power without being fully consumed by its sadistic personality.
