Description
Misao Makimachi is a sixteen-year-old kunoichi and the youngest member of the Oniwabanshū, a clan of ninja spies originally based in Edo and later operating out of Kyoto. She is the granddaughter of the former leader of the Oniwabanshū, known as the Okashira. After the previous leader Shinomori Aoshi and his inner circle left her in the care of Kashiwazaki Nenji, also called Okina, when she was eight years old, she was raised at the Aoi-Ya inn in Kyoto. Misao holds deep admiration for Aoshi and has strong romantic feelings for him. She also shares a close bond with Okina, who becomes a father figure, and with the ninja Han’nya, who taught her how to fight.
Misao’s personality is bright, energetic, and stubborn. She is often described as loud and fun-loving, with a tendency to act without hesitation. She does not conform to traditional feminine expectations and can be rebellious when necessary. Despite her energetic exterior, she is earnest and straightforward, and she shows a capacity for deep loyalty and emotional depth. Her motivations are initially driven by her desire to find Aoshi, whom she believes is missing. After encountering Himura Kenshin on the road to Kyoto, she latches onto him in the hope that he will lead her to Aoshi. As the story progresses, her motivations expand to include protecting her clan, standing up against the threat of Makoto Shishio, and reconciling with Aoshi after he turns against his former allies.
In the New Kyoto Arc, the story is told from Misao’s perspective, making her the central point-of-view character. She serves as a lively counterbalance to the darker tone of the Kyoto storyline, bringing optimism and energy into Kenshin’s journey. Her role includes guiding Kenshin to Kyoto, connecting him with the Oniwabanshū, and later fighting alongside Kenshin’s group against Shishio’s forces. She also takes on the mantle of the new Okashira of the Oniwabanshū after Aoshi’s betrayal, refusing to recognize his authority any longer and stepping up to lead her clan in his absence.
Key relationships shape Misao’s development. Her bond with Aoshi is the most pivotal; she admires him unconditionally at first, but after learning of his role in the deaths of Han’nya and other members and his attempt to kill Okina, she struggles to accept his transformation. Kenshin becomes a trusted friend and a stabilizing influence; he promises to bring Aoshi back to her, a vow that gives her hope. She also forms close friendships with Kamiya Kaoru and Myōjin Yahiko, serving as a link between the Tokyo group and the Kyoto setting. Okina remains a steadfast caretaker, and his near-death at Aoshi’s hands forces Misao to mature.
Misao’s character development is marked by her transition from a naive and headstrong girl into a responsible leader. She learns to confront painful truths about the people she loves and to stand on her own. She shows resilience in the face of loss, such as the deaths of Han’nya and the other Oniwabanshū members, and she refuses to give up on Aoshi even when others think he is beyond redemption. Her ability to keep hope alive and to act with courage under pressure defines her growth.
As a kunoichi, Misao possesses notable combat abilities. Her weapon of choice is the kunai, which she throws with precision and skill. She has a signature technique called Kan Setsu Tobi Kanai, a flying kunai attack. She is agile and capable of fighting multiple opponents, as demonstrated when she defeats four bandits early in her introduction. Her training under the Oniwabanshū also grants her skills in stealth, espionage, and information gathering. While not as physically powerful as the series’ main fighters, her speed, unpredictability, and determination make her a valuable asset in battle.
