Description
Nenji Kashiwazaki, also known by the alias Okina, is an elderly figure who serves as a key supporting character in the Rurouni Kenshin: New Kyoto Arc. He is a former member of the Oniwabanshu, a group of ninja spies and bodyguards who once served the shogunate. In his prime, Kashiwazaki was considered the most feared and capable fighter within the organization, reputed to be the only one who could match the former leader of the Oniwabanshu in combat. He wielded steel tonfa, which he used to block sword blows and fight with great effectiveness. Despite his formidable past, he chose not to become the next leader, believing that position should go to a younger person, and instead recommended Shinomori Aoshi for the role. After retiring from active fighting, he was assigned to Kyoto as an information agent and eventually settled down to run the Aoiya, an inn and restaurant that also served as the Oniwabanshu’s headquarters. It was there that he raised Makimachi Misao from childhood, acting as a father figure to her.
Kashiwazaki’s personality is marked by a gentle and excitable spirit. He is easygoing and loves life’s simple pleasures, especially drinking, parties, and the company of attractive women, which sometimes gives him a lecherous outward appearance. However, beneath this jovial exterior, he remains extremely sharp-witted and resourceful. He possesses a quick mind and retains an extensive knowledge of Kyoto’s inner workings, thanks to the intelligence network he still maintains from his days as an Oniwabanshu agent. His motivations are rooted in a desire for a peaceful retirement, but he is always ready to offer aid when the safety of those he cares about is at risk. He values the younger generation and often steps in to provide guidance or support, particularly to Misao and Himura Kenshin.
In the story of the New Kyoto Arc, Kashiwazaki plays a crucial role as a facilitator and source of local intelligence. He uses his network to help Kenshin locate important individuals such as the swordsmith Arai Seiku and Kenshin’s master, Hiko Seijuro. His inn becomes a safe haven and meeting point for the main characters during their stay in Kyoto. Although he claims to have given up fighting, he does not hesitate to take up his tonfa again when directly threatened or when his allies are in danger. He is shown to be a capable strategist and a strong fighter even in his old age, able to hold his own against skilled opponents.
Key relationships include his bond with Misao, whom he raised with affection and a somewhat lenient, indulgent attitude. He respects Shinomori Aoshi deeply, having recommended him as the next leader, and is saddened by Aoshi’s later turn toward vengeance. He interacts with Kenshin as a helpful elder and ally, offering both information and occasional combat support. He also maintains ties with other former Oniwabanshu members and the remnants of their old network.
Development-wise, Kashiwazaki undergoes little change in the New Kyoto Arc itself, as he is already a settled and wise figure. His role highlights the transition from the Oniwabanshu’s shadowy past to a more legitimate, peaceful existence. His notable abilities include exceptional skill with tonfa, years of combat experience, expert strategic thinking, and mastery of espionage and information gathering. Overall, Nenji Kashiwazaki is a layered character: a retired ninja with a playful demeanor, a sharp mind, and more than enough fighting prowess to back up his legacy.
