Description
Kaoru Kamiya is the acting instructor of the Kamiya Kasshin-ryu, a kendo school located in Tokyo that she inherited from her father, Kamiya Koshijirou, after he was drafted and died in the Seinan War. In the New Kyoto Arc, she is a young woman of average height with long black hair typically tied back in a ponytail with a large, colorful ribbon. Her father founded the Kamiya Kasshin-ryu style, which is based on the philosophy of the "katsujin-ken," or the sword that gives life, meaning its techniques are meant to protect people and subdue opponents rather than kill them.

Kaoru has a strong-willed and obstinate personality, carrying herself with the pride of her samurai lineage. She has a fiery temper and is prone to violence when she feels insulted, often leading to comedic quarrels with other characters like Yahiko and Sanosuke. Despite this, she is deeply compassionate, courageous, and has a strong sense of justice, always ready to help those in need. A notable trait is her ability to see the good in others regardless of their past, which is why she accepts Kenshin, as well as others like Yahiko and Megumi, into her life without judgment. Her domestic skills are notoriously poor, particularly her cooking, for which she has a very bad reputation.

In the New Kyoto Arc, her primary motivation is her attachment to Kenshin Himura, the wanderer who saved her dojo from an impostor claiming to be the assassin Hitokiri Battosai. When Kenshin leaves Tokyo to confront the deadly former assassin Shishio Makoto in Kyoto, Kaoru falls into a deep depression, feeling lost without him. This demonstrates one of her greatest fears: that Kenshin will return to his wandering life and leave her alone again. However, after receiving encouragement from Takani Megumi, she resolves to follow him and travels to Kyoto with her young student, Myojin Yahiko. Upon arriving, she reunites with Kenshin and allies herself with the Oniwabanshu, a group of former spies, at their base in Aoi Village. During the conflict, she joins the fight to defend Aoi Village against Shishio's elite warriors, the Juppongatana. Her key relationships in this arc are with Kenshin, for whom she serves as a primary emotional anchor and source of will to live, and with Makimachi Misao, a young member of the Oniwabanshu who becomes her close friend and ally in battle.

Throughout the story, Kaoru demonstrates notable abilities as a swordswoman. According to the creator, her skill level is equivalent to that of a national champion in kendo. While she is not as powerful as fighters like Kenshin or Sanosuke, who possess superhuman strength, she is highly analytical and resourceful in combat. She is proficient in the techniques of the Kamiya Kasshin-ryu, including a powerful move called the Hiza Hishigi, or Knee Crush, where she uses the hilt of her wooden sword to destroy an opponent's knee joint. Her primary weapon is a wooden sword known as a bokken or shinai, in keeping with her school's life-giving philosophy. Beyond her physical skills, her development is marked by immense emotional strength and determination, choosing to fight at Kenshin's side rather than waiting passively for his return.
