Description
Hannah Annafellows is a fictional character from the second season of the anime Black Butler. She serves as the sole maid of the Trancy household and is a demon of considerable power, though her true nature and origins are initially shrouded in mystery.

In terms of appearance, Hannah is depicted as a tall and beautiful woman with long, silvery-white hair, typically styled into a braid. She has dark, tan-colored skin and an often melancholic or troubled expression. For most of the narrative, she covers her left eye with a bandage or an eye-patch, a physical wound inflicted upon her by her young master, Alois Trancy. Her standard attire is a distinctive purple and white maid’s uniform.

Hannah’s personality is marked by a profound stillness and an unwavering, almost incomprehensible, loyalty. She is quiet, reserved, and rarely displays overt emotion, which creates an aura of mystery around her. Her master, Alois, finds her impossible to read and is deeply disturbed by her constant, watchful presence. Despite suffering severe mistreatment and abuse at Alois’s hands, including the injury to her eye and constant verbal degradation, she never retaliates nor abandons her duties. This unnerving patience and devotion are not born from fear or servitude but from a deeply personal and complex emotional attachment that is revealed over the course of the story.

The foundation of Hannah’s motivations lies in her past before coming to the Trancy estate. As a demon who had grown weary over her long, monotonous existence, she formed a contract with a young boy named Luka Macken, who was Alois’s younger biological brother. Hannah fulfilled Luka’s desperate wish, which led to the destruction of the village where the brothers were mistreated, and in accordance with their pact, she consumed his soul. However, Luka’s final moments, filled not with fear but with gratitude towards Hannah and selfless love for his brother’s future happiness, profoundly moved her demonic heart. For the first time, she developed genuine feelings of love and attachment—for Luka and, by extension, for Alois. Her role in the Trancy mansion is primarily driven by this love; she endures Alois’s cruelty and serves him to protect and remain close to the soul of the boy who changed her, hoping to eventually reunite the two brothers.

Her key relationships define her actions throughout the series. Her relationship with Alois Trancy is the central one. It is a deeply conflicted bond of master and servant, abuser and silent sufferer, and ultimately, a twisted form of genuine love. Alois despises her because he cannot understand her or her motives, yet her loyalty is absolute. In contrast, she had a purely contractual but emotionally transformative relationship with Luka Macken, whose innocent sacrifice awakened her capacity for love. Within the Trancy household, she coexists with the butler, Claude Faustus, another demon whose cold ambition and manipulative nature clash with her own emotional devotion. Hannah also has command over three demonic servants, triplet brothers named Thompson, Timber, and Canterbury, who are fiercely loyal to her and follow her orders without question.

Over the course of the story, Hannah undergoes a subtle but significant shift in her role. Initially appearing as a passive, victimized maid, she is later revealed to be a master strategist working towards her own hidden goal: to grant the souls of Alois and Luka a form of eternal peace together. After Alois is killed by Claude, Hannah absorbs his soul and later transfers Alois’s eye and soul into Ciel Phantomhive’s body, setting the final events in motion. She confesses her past and her love for both brothers to Alois, leading him to form a new, legitimate contract with her. In the climax, she fulfills Alois’s final wish, using her abilities to transform Ciel Phantomhive into a demon, thereby ensuring that Sebastian Michaelis can never consume his soul. In the end, she carries the souls of Alois and Luka within her own body, choosing to stay with Claude’s lifeless form as their world collapses, achieving her purpose of keeping them all together.

Hannah possesses several notable abilities befitting a demon. Her most unique and defining power is her body’s function as a living scabbard for a legendary demonic sword called Laevateinn. She can draw the sword from her own mouth, wielding it in combat. This ability earns her the epithet of "the sheath of the demon sword." As a demon, she also possesses a powerful regenerative healing factor, allowing her to survive normally fatal wounds, such as those inflicted by the reaper Grell Sutcliff. Furthermore, she has the unique and crucial ability to absorb, internalize, and transfer objects like eyes and even souls into her own body, a power that proves essential to the story’s resolution. Her physical combat skills are also formidable, as she demonstrates proficiency with various weapons, including knives and pistols, in addition to her supernatural strength.
