Description
Ivan Whisky, designated Cyborg 001, is a central figure in the 009 Re:Cyborg film. He originates from Russia, where he was an infant diagnosed with a severe and terminal illness. In a desperate attempt to save his son, his father, a brilliant but ultimately obsessive brain surgeon named Dr. Gamo Whisky, performed a series of brain enhancement procedures. These experiments granted Ivan immense psychic powers and superhuman intelligence but permanently stunted his physical growth, leaving him as a perpetual infant. After his father's experiments were complete, Ivan was taken into the custody of the Black Ghost organization, which designated him as the first of its 00 Cyborg program. Due to Black Ghost's technology being underdeveloped at the time, he was placed in cryogenic stasis until procedures and equipment advanced sufficiently.
Physically, Ivan appears as a human infant who has not yet reached his first birthday. In the film, he has a short, sky-blue bowl cut hairstyle and light gray-blue eyes that are fully visible, a departure from earlier depictions where his eyes were often hidden. He is typically dressed in a simple, bright red blanket sleeper and is never without a realistic yellow pacifier in his mouth. Despite his infantile exterior, Ivan possesses cognitive abilities that far exceed that of a normal human adult.
Ivan's personality is a unique juxtaposition of his physical state and his mental capacity. He follows the basic instincts and needs of a baby, being unable to walk or verbally communicate, and relies on his teammates for care. However, this vulnerable exterior conceals the fact that he is arguably the most intelligent and powerful member of the cyborg team. His thinking processes are highly advanced, making him more aware of his surroundings than his teammates often realize. He frequently acts as the team's strategist and a source of wisdom, using his intelligence to survey battle situations and analyze events. He shows a childlike curiosity, but also a mature and caring nature, willing to risk himself to protect the group he considers his family.
His primary motivation is the fight against Black Ghost, the organization that transformed him. Having lived as a test subject, he is driven to ensure that others do not suffer the same fate. He serves a crucial role within the story, acting as the team's mission control and last-ditch psychic defense. He is instrumental in making Cyborg 009, Joe Shimamura, aware of his cybernetic nature and often provides critical information and telepathic communication for the team. His powers are potent enough to withstand enemy fire and overcome powerful foes.
Ivan's key relationships are defined by dependency and mutual respect. He has a very close bond with Cyborg 003, Françoise Arnoul, who serves as his primary caretaker and a mother figure, as he was separated from his birth mother. His relationship with Cyborg 009 is significant but started on a difficult note: his curiosity once led him to deliberately put Joe in danger to test his powers, causing friction. However, this relationship improves as he saves 009's life on multiple occasions and guides him. He also lives with and is under the care of Dr. Isaac Gilmore, the scientist who helped them escape Black Ghost.
In terms of character development, Ivan gains a deeper understanding of his father's actions. Rather than harboring hostility toward Dr. Gamo Whisky for the experiments that robbed him of a normal life, Ivan comes to acknowledge that the procedures ultimately saved him from his terminal illness. This perspective allows him to help his father find a form of redemption.
Ivan's abilities are entirely psychic in nature. He is a powerful telepath, allowing him to communicate directly with the minds of others and read their thoughts, as his own vocal cords are underdeveloped. He possesses potent psychokinesis, which enables him to move objects and people with his mind, sometimes even making his own baby basket levitate. In the 009 Re:Cyborg film, his psychic powers manifest as visible, light blue electrical energy. He is also capable of teleportation. The strain of using his formidable powers is immense, and because of his frail infant body, he will often fall into a deep sleep after a significant psychic exertion, recuperating for extended periods.
