Description
Máscara de Muerte de Cáncer is the Gold Saint who guards the fourth temple of the Sanctuary, the Temple of Cancer, in the film Saint Seiya: Legend of Sanctuary. His true name is never revealed, and he is known only by his ominous title. He is of Italian origin and became a Gold Saint at a very young age after training in Sicily.
His personality is defined by extreme cruelty, sadism, and a complete lack of empathy or respect for human life. He embraces a nihilistic philosophy, believing that power is the only measure of worth and that the ends justify any means, no matter how brutal. He finds genuine pleasure in fighting and killing, and his most grotesque habit is collecting the faces of his victims and displaying them as macabre trophies within his temple. These faces are the tormented souls of those he has slain, unable to find peace. He is not driven by any misguided sense of justice but rather by a love of violence and a desire to serve whoever offers him the most advantage.
In the story of Legend of Sanctuary, Máscara de Muerte is a loyal enforcer of the false Pope Saga, whose own ambitions for power align with the Cancer Saint's worldview. He acts as an antagonist to the Bronze Saints as they attempt to reach Athena. His role is to stop them at the Temple of Cancer, and he confronts Shiryu of Dragon and Hyoga of Cygnus. He boasts of his strength and his collection of souls, fully confident in his superiority as a Gold Saint.
His key relationship is with his primary opponent, Shiryu of Dragon. The battle between them is a direct clash of ideologies. Shiryu fights to protect others and uphold justice, while Máscara de Muerte fights for the sheer joy of destruction and the belief that might makes right. This conflict defines his role in the film. He also serves under the false Pope Saga, but this relationship is one of convenience rather than genuine loyalty.
The character shows no development or redemption during the events of Legend of Sanctuary. He remains an unrepentant villain to the end. His defeat is a direct result of his own corruption. During his final battle with Shiryu, his Gold Cloth abandons him, recognizing that he is no longer worthy to wear it because his heart is filled with evil and he has betrayed the ideals of a Saint of Athena. Stripped of his armor, he is ultimately defeated by Shiryu and cast into the Yomotsu Hirasaka, the passage to the Underworld.
His most notable ability is the Sekishiki Meikai Ha, often translated as Demonic Waves or Waves of the Underworld. This technique allows him to separate an opponent's soul from their body and send that soul directly to the Yomotsu Hirasaka, the boundary between the world of the living and the dead, effectively killing them. He is also able to manipulate the souls of the dead and has demonstrated telekinetic and teleportation powers, including the ability to travel freely between the world of the living and the Underworld. Like all Gold Saints, he possesses immense physical strength, speed, and the ability to move at light speed.
