Description
Masque de Mort, also known as the Gold Saint of Cancer, is one of the twelve Gold Saints serving the Sanctuary in the film Saint Seiya: Legend of Sanctuary. He is the guardian of the fourth temple of the zodiac, the Temple of Cancer. His background is only briefly outlined: he is of Italian nationality and trained in Sicily to become a Saint. He became a Gold Saint at a young age, but his past before that remains largely unknown.
In terms of personality, Masque de Mort is portrayed as a sadistic and bloodthirsty individual. He derives genuine pleasure from killing and shows no regard for innocent lives. He collects the faces of his victims, adorning the interior of his temple with their tortured expressions as trophies. He believes that strength and power are the ultimate measures of justice, which is why he willingly aligns himself with the false Pope, Saga, who seized control of the Sanctuary through force. His loyalty is not to the ideals of Athena but to whoever can offer him the most power and the freedom to indulge his violent nature.
His role in the story is that of an antagonist during the battle of the Twelve Temples. When the Bronze Saints Seiya and Shiryu enter his domain, he immediately confronts them. He displays a mocking and arrogant demeanor, taunting his opponents and boasting about his invincibility while protected by his Gold Cloth. He single-handedly fights Shiryu, using his signature technique to try to send the Dragon Saint's soul to the underworld. Masque de Mort serves as one of the major obstacles that the Bronze Saints must overcome to reach the Sanctuary's summit and confront Saga.
Key relationships include his association with the other traitorous Gold Saints, particularly Aphrodite of Pisces, who shares his cruel nature and allegiance to Saga. He has no close bonds with any other characters; he views his fellow Saints as either tools or rivals. His interaction with Shiryu is adversarial, and he shows contempt for the Bronze Saint’s sense of justice. He also briefly interacts with the Gold Saint Mu of Aries, but only in a hostile context.
Masque de Mort undergoes no meaningful development during the film. He remains a static villain who is defeated due to his own moral corruption. His Gold Cloth abandons him when it deems him unworthy of the title of Saint, leaving him vulnerable. He is ultimately thrown into the Yomotsu Hirasaka, the entrance to the underworld, by Shiryu’s upgraded attack.
His notable abilities are centered on his mastery of cosmos energy and his connection to the underworld. His primary technique is the Sekishiki Meikai Ha, which allows him to separate a target’s soul from their body and send it into the realm of the dead through a dimensional rift. He can also use powerful telekinesis, as seen when he attacks Shunrei from across vast distances while inside the Yomotsu. As a Gold Saint, he possesses immense physical strength, the ability to move and strike at light speed, and a durable Gold Cloth that provides near-impenetrable defense. His combat style relies on psychological intimidation and overwhelming force rather than strategy or compassion.
