Description
Lady Isabel is the human incarnation of the goddess Athena and the central female character in the 2014 CGI film Saint Seiya: Legend of Sanctuary. She is introduced as Saori Kido, the wealthy adopted granddaughter of the late Duke Alman di Thule, also known as Mitsumasa Kido. The story begins when she is a baby: the Gold Saint Aiolos of Sagittarius rescues her from an assassination attempt by the rogue Pope of Sanctuary, entrusts her to Mitsumasa, and dies. Sixteen years later, Saori lives a sheltered life but is troubled by mysterious powers she cannot control. During a drive with her butler Tatsumi, she learns of her true identity as the reincarnation of Athena and of the existence of the Saints—warriors who protect her. She is then attacked by assassins sent by the Pope, but the Bronze Saint Seiya of Pegasus saves her. After meeting Seiya and his comrades Hyōga, Shiryū, Shun, and Ikki, she decides to travel to the Sanctuary to reclaim her rightful place as Athena and to stop the Pope’s plans.

Personality-wise, Lady Isabel is depicted as serious, dutiful, and serene, yet initially hesitant and uncertain about her powers and destiny. She grows into a resolute leader who cares deeply for her Saints and the peace of the Earth. She is forgiving, even toward those who have wronged her, and she is willing to sacrifice her own life to protect others. She carries a sense of noble responsibility but also a genuine warmth, forming a close bond with Seiya and the other Bronze Saints. Her motivations are driven by a desire to protect humanity and to uphold justice, as well as to prove herself worthy of her divine heritage.

In the story, Lady Isabel serves as the catalyst for the Saints’ journey. She accompanies the Bronze Saints as they cross the twelve houses of the Sanctuary, each guarded by a Gold Saint. She demonstrates her divine Cosmo on several occasions, such as when Leo Gold Saint Aiolia comes to test her—she releases a powerful light that makes him doubt the Pope’s accusations. She also revives injured Saints with her power, showing her ability to heal. Her role is not that of a frontline fighter but of a spiritual anchor and source of strength for her warriors. At the climax, she is captured by the Pope (Gemini Saga) and nearly killed, but Seiya’s intervention saves her. After Saga’s defeat, she assumes command of the Sanctuary and addresses all the Saints, cementing her role as their goddess.

Key relationships include her deep trust in Seiya, who becomes her most loyal protector; her connection with the other Bronze Saints, whom she regards as family; and her fraught history with the Gold Saints, many of whom initially oppose her. She also has a paternal relationship with the spirit of her adoptive grandfather, Mitsumasa, whose legacy guides her. Her development throughout the film is marked by a transition from a naive, sheltered girl into a confident and compassionate leader who embraces her divine nature and her love for humanity.

Notable abilities include the manipulation of Cosmo, the supernatural energy that all Saints use. As Athena, she can emit a powerful divine aura, heal wounds, and enhance the Cosmo of her allies. She wields a staff or scepter on occasion, but her primary strength lies in her inner light and her ability to inspire loyalty and hope. She does not engage in direct combat, yet her presence is pivotal to the Saints’ power and success.
