Description
The character known as Cancer in the film Saint Seiya: Legend of Sanctuary is the Gold Saint charged with guarding the fourth temple of the Sanctuary, known as the Temple of Cancer. His name is Deathmask, and he is depicted as a powerful and deeply villainous figure, markedly different from many of his fellow Gold Saints who are driven by a complex sense of duty. In this adaptation, Deathmask is presented as a man around thirty-five years old, with a rugged, unkempt appearance that includes a shaggy beard, contrasting with some of his other incarnations across the Saint Seiya franchise. His physical presence is imposing, reflecting his immense power and cruel nature.

Deathmask’s personality is defined by a cheerful embrace of cruelty and a profound contempt for those he considers weak. He displays a sadistic enjoyment in battle, openly mocking his opponents and demonstrating no regard for innocent life. This is a core trait that remains consistent with his character in the original source material, where he decorated his temple with the literal death masks of his victims, including warriors, women, and even children. The Legend of Sanctuary reimagines his temple as a stark contrast to this grim history; it is remodeled to resemble a colorful, flashing ballroom, yet this gaudy exterior only serves to underscore the twisted and mocking nature of its guardian, who takes pleasure in the deaths of his enemies.

His primary motivation is a cynical belief in power. To Deathmask, justice is not a moral absolute but merely the name given to the will of the victor. He serves the false Pope of the Sanctuary not out of loyalty to Athena, but because he believes that power determines what is right. He has no internal conflict about his actions; he is a straightforward agent of chaos and strength, making him a relentless obstacle for the protagonists.

In the narrative of Legend of Sanctuary, Deathmask serves as the primary antagonist during the heroes' assault on the twelve temples. When the Bronze Saints Cygnus Hyoga and Dragon Shiryu arrive at his temple, he confronts them both simultaneously, demonstrating his overwhelming superiority as a Gold Saint. He easily overpowers them, showcasing the vast gap in power between the Bronze and Gold ranks. His key role is to provide a seemingly insurmountable challenge that forces the heroes to surpass their limits.

His key relationships are primarily antagonistic. His most significant conflict is with Dragon Shiryu. During their battle, Deathmask’s cruelty is further highlighted when he attempts to send Shiryu to the Yomotsu Hirasaka, the entrance to the underworld, and shows a complete disregard for Shiryu’s loved ones. This confrontation is central to his character arc within the film. During the fight, Deathmask's own Gold Cloth abandons him. The armor, which resonates with the user's heart, rejects him because of his overwhelming evil. This development is the defining moment of his downfall; stripped of his divine protection, he becomes vulnerable. As he rages against his fate, Shiryu is able to defeat him, throwing him into the pit he had prepared for his enemies. His ultimate fate is being abandoned by the very symbol of his office and cast into the underworld.

As a Gold Saint, Deathmask has mastered his cosmos to the Seventh Sense, allowing him to move and attack at the speed of light and perform seemingly supernatural feats. His most notable ability is the Sekishiki Meikai Ha, or the Praesepe Underworld Waves. This technique allows him to separate the soul of his opponent from their physical body and banish that soul to the Yomotsu Hirasaka, a border between the world of the living and the dead. A victim of this attack loses all physical strength and cannot return to their body without divine intervention. Deathmask himself, however, can freely travel to and from this dimension without any ill effects. In addition to this spiritual attack, he possesses tremendous physical strength and telekinetic power, which he uses to levitate himself and manipulate objects over vast distances. In Legend of Sanctuary, his power is portrayed as being so great that he can effortlessly battle two Bronze Saints at once, only losing his advantage when his own armor abandons him.
