Hyōma Kunato, a 21-year-old male of the Saenome clan, guides or seals supernatural Tsukumogami. A prominent scar marks his left cheek, and his sharp, often expressionless face frequently causes initial misunderstandings. Lean yet sinewy, his scarred physique reflects years of combat. He typically wears a fall-winter outfit: red scarf, black coat, grey pants, and brown shoes.
Serious and stoic, Hyōma adheres to a strict, samurai-like code. He spends downtime in physical training and exhibits social awkwardness, especially during casual or humorous moments. Nervousness triggers unconscious archaic speech patterns reminiscent of historical samurai dramas. Beneath his stern exterior lies deep kindness and an unwavering commitment to promises.
A childhood tragedy defines him: witnessing a Tsukumogami betray and murder his older siblings, who raised him. This cemented his hatred for all Tsukumogami and fueled his path of vengeance. Raised under his grandfather, Zouhei Kunato—the current family head—Hyōma is designated the clan heir. He joined the Saenome young, undertaking live combat missions from age 12 and developing exceptional spirit-subduing proficiency throughout adolescence.
Hyōma's combat relies on two systems: spell cards for utility (barriers, first aid, decoys) and the Kunato family's specialized "Hikite" weapons. These manipulate dimensional gates to attack, defend, or erase targets. His techniques include "Sansa" (three-pronged gate spear), "Yomogake" (wide frontal gate), "Onogoro" (barrier protection), and "Kuubou" (a large-scale solo-use sealing field he modified). A notable feat is his solo defeat of the powerful Tsukumogami "Ouu no Onigawara" at 18. His physical prowess encompasses immense strength, analytical perception, heightened senses, and endurance.
Character development begins when his grandfather forces him to reside at the Nagatsuki household, home to Botan Nagatsuki—a human living peacefully with six benevolent Tsukumogami as family—to temper his hatred. Initially confrontational, Hyōma declares hostility towards the spirits, provoking physical clashes. Exposure to Botan's kindness and her own trauma, including past kidnapping, gradually shifts his perspective. He pledges to protect her, offering his first genuine smile and marking a transition from vengeance to guardianship.
Throughout subsequent conflicts, including battles against antagonistic Saenome factions in Kyoto, Hyōma evolves beyond reliance on his siblings' Hikite. He forges his own weapon, signifying commitment to self-determined ideals over inherited rage. His relationship with Botan deepens into mutual trust and implied romantic feelings, evidenced by flustered reactions to engagement teasing. This growth reflects acceptance that not all Tsukumogami are malignant, though he maintains vigilance against genuine threats.
Distinctive trivia includes his use of the formal first-person pronoun "Jibun" and a tendency toward theatrical samurai diction during anxiety. He remains unaware of his habitual lack of facial expressiveness.
