Description
Gabu is a male wolf and one of the two main protagonists of the anime Arashi no Yoru ni: Himitsu no Tomodachi. He is a medium-built wolf with red fur and distinctive blue eyes. His physical characteristics include a high body, long legs, a broad skull that tapers to a narrow muzzle, and a bushy tail with a thick, dense underfur.
In terms of personality, Gabu is friendly and kind-hearted, which sets him apart from the typical expectations of a wolf. He is portrayed as somewhat clumsy and inept, often failing at hunting and holding a low rank within his own wolf pack. Despite his natural predatory instincts, he possesses a gentle nature that allows him to form an unlikely bond with a goat. He is also known to have a big appetite, and his stomach often starts growling audibly.
The background of the story reveals that Gabu first meets his friend Mei during a stormy night while both are seeking shelter in a dark barn. Unable to see each other, they strike up a conversation and form a connection, agreeing to meet again using the password a stormy night. When they finally meet in the light, Gabu is surprised to discover that his new companion is a goat, his natural prey. However, he quickly overcomes this shock and decides to continue their friendship despite their inherent differences.
Gabu's primary motivation throughout the series is to protect and preserve his friendship with Mei. He is willing to go against the laws of nature and betray his own pack to keep their bond alive. When their secret relationship is discovered by the wolf pack and the goat herd, both groups forbid the friendship. In response, Gabu decides to run away with Mei to find an emerald forest where a goat and a wolf can live together in peace.
Within the story, Gabu serves as a central figure who challenges the natural order. His role is defined by his struggle against the prejudices of his own society and his instincts. He often finds himself in conflict with his pack leader, Giro, who holds a grudge against goats and views Gabu as a traitor to all wolves. In his own pack, Gabu is not well-respected; the other wolves see him as slow and unattractive, and the female wolves largely ignore him because he is an unproductive hunter. However, his childhood friend Lala, the prettiest and most popular she-wolf in the herd, looks after him and covers for his strange behavior when she notices him sneaking away to meet Mei.
Gabu experiences significant development throughout the narrative. His loyalty to Mei is tested in extreme situations. At one point, after Mei offers to sacrifice himself for Gabu to eat, Gabu initially agrees but ultimately realizes that no matter how hungry he is, he cannot consume his friend. Later, after protecting Mei from the pursuing wolf pack, Gabu is caught in an avalanche and loses his memory. When he is reunited with Mei, he no longer remembers their friendship and views Mei only as prey. His memory only returns when an angry Mei shouts about the night they first met, referencing the stormy night that started their relationship.
Regarding notable abilities, Gabu does not possess any supernatural or extraordinary skills. His capabilities are consistent with those of a wolf, such as physical strength, speed, and natural predatory instincts. However, his story is not defined by his physical prowess but by his emotional strength and his ability to choose friendship over instinct. His most significant act is his willingness to fight his own pack leader to defend his goat friend, standing up against his former pack even at the cost of his own life.
