Description
Mamoru Itō is one of the five main characters in the story. He grows up in the village of Kamisu 66 and enrolls in Sage Academy at age twelve, where he joins the same class as Saki Watanabe, Maria Akizuki, Satoru Asahina, and Shun Aonuma. Physically, he is a short boy with messy light-brown hair and golden eyes.

Mamoru is the most timid and sensitive member of the group. He rarely voices his own thoughts or opinions, often deferring to others and following along rather than taking initiative. His shyness and lack of assertiveness make him easy to overlook, and he struggles with anxiety and fear more than his peers. He is deeply affected by stress and is the least suitable among the group for handling the dark secrets of their society. Despite his fragile emotional state, he is gentle, loyal, and values his friendships immensely. He develops romantic feelings for Maria Akizuki, who becomes his duty partner.

His primary motivation is the desire for safety and security. When the village’s Board of Education targets him for elimination due to his perceived instability, his fear drives him to flee into the wilderness. Maria, unwilling to abandon him, joins him in exile. This decision defines his role in the larger narrative: their flight and eventual fate become a crucial turning point. The couple later has a child, who is taken and raised by the Queerat leader Yakomaru. That child is later used as a weapon in the Queerat rebellion, bypassing the human psychological restraints that normally prevent psychics from harming one another. Mamoru and Maria themselves are killed shortly after the child’s birth.

Mamoru’s relationships are central to his character. He shares a deep bond with Maria, who becomes his protector and emotional support. His friendship with Saki, Satoru, and Shun remains important, though his shyness often keeps him on the periphery. He is particularly close to Saki, as she tries to look after him. His relationship with the authorities of Kamisu 66 is defined by fear and distrust, as they view him as a liability to be removed.

Over the course of the story, Mamoru undergoes limited visible development because his time in the narrative is cut short. However, his choice to flee rather than passively accept elimination marks a moment of quiet bravery, even if it stems from fear. His resistance to the village’s hypnotic memory alteration shows a degree of inner strength, as he recalls traumatic events before his friends do.

In terms of abilities, Mamoru possesses the telekinetic power known as Cantus, but he is the least skilled and least powerful of the five friends. He lacks the raw strength or finesse that others demonstrate. However, he has a unique talent for using his psychic powers to create beautiful paintings, expressing his emotions through art. This artistic ability is his most notable and distinctive skill, setting him apart from his peers despite his overall weakness.
