TV-Series
Description
Iori Asahina is the tenth son of the Asahina family. He is a high school student, initially attending the private prestigious school Bright Centrair Academy. Information regarding his age places him at eighteen years old, and he was born on April 17th. He has gray hair and hazel-colored eyes.

On the surface, Iori is known for having a calm, collected, and caring nature, often described as having princely manners. He is well-regarded and popular, being recognized by students from other schools as an academically gifted and athletic individual. At home, it is his responsibility to care for the family garden. However, beneath this composed exterior lies a much more complex and troubled personality. He is perceived as being somewhat reclusive and anti-social by his brothers. Iori is also capable of becoming frightening, particularly during the winter.

The primary motivation for Iori's darker tendencies stems from a traumatic past event. While in middle school, he had a girlfriend named Fuyuka Shiraishi. Fuyuka died in a car accident. This loss created a profound and lasting emptiness in him, and it has been stated that his heart has remained hollow ever since her death. The trauma from this event led to severe psychological distress, including suicidal ideation. His desire to escape his pain is a central driving force for his actions, and the conflict between his polished public persona and his internal anguish defines his role in the story.

In the narrative, Iori’s interactions with his family, particularly his older brother Kaname and his stepsister Ema, are of critical importance. He and Kaname were once very close, and Kaname was the brother who understood him best. However, following Fuyuka’s death, their relationship became severely strained. Iori developed a deep resentment towards Kaname for preventing his suicide attempts, eventually coming to view him as an enemy. This animosity escalates to the point where Iori becomes violent and attempts to harm Kaname, feeling that his brother is intruding upon his personal anguish and his new attachment to Ema.

Iori’s relationship with Ema begins with his quiet acceptance of her into the family. He is perceptive of her feelings and tries to be a supportive figure for her, often giving her flowers that relate to her current emotional state. For example, he once gave her an iris, which in the language of flowers carried the hidden meaning, "I will risk everything to love you". His feelings for her become intertwined with his unresolved grief and possessive nature. Misinterpreting her familial kindness as a romantic commitment, he falls into a state of obsession, believing she is as emotionally desolate as he is and that he must be the one to save her. This leads him to attempt a forced double suicide with her at his deceased girlfriend's grave, demonstrating the full extent of his psychological break.

The character of Iori undergoes a significant, dark development arc. The anime adaptation portrays him as a less overtly violent character, with the existence of his deceased girlfriend being ambiguous. His love for Ema is still expressed, but the most extreme events from the original novels are not depicted. In the light novel source material, his development involves hitting a profound low point of violence and obsession before experiencing a form of salvation. After his plan at the grave is thwarted and it is revealed that the cross necklace he believed was Fuyuka’s final gift was actually a well-intentioned lie from Kaname, he flees to a cliff to end his life. The sight of the cross, which ultimately represents his brother's care, brings him back from the edge, causing him to declare that he will overcome his struggles alone. He then leaves the family home for a period. In the second season, Iori returns, having become a model and begun the slow process of recovery. His notable abilities are not combat-oriented but rather lie in his perceptiveness of others’ emotions and his knowledge of floriography, the language of flowers.
