Description
Ema is the main protagonist of Brothers Conflict, a young woman who becomes the stepsister to the thirteen Asahina brothers. Born on July 2nd, she is sixteen years old at the start of the story and stands at 168 centimeters tall with a slender build. She has light brown hair, usually styled in a side ponytail, and matching brown eyes.
Ema’s background is marked by a complex family history. She was raised by Rintarou Hinata, a famous adventurer and her adoptive father. Her biological parents, who were friends of Rintarou, passed away when she was an infant, leading to her adoption. Because her father was often away on long overseas expeditions, she grew up accustomed to being alone and fending for herself, developing a sense of early independence. The story begins when her father remarries Miwa Asahina, a successful apparel maker, and Ema moves into the Sunrise Residence to live with her new thirteen stepbrothers.
In terms of personality, Ema is consistently portrayed as a kind-hearted, honest, and polite girl who deeply desires a loving family. She is very caring and takes her role as a new family member seriously, often helping with household chores, at which she is very skilled, particularly in cooking and making sweets. Despite her gentle and often permissive nature, which can make her seem like a pushover, she possesses a quiet inner strength and certainty about her own feelings. She is clear-headed and honest with both herself and her brothers, consistently expressing her wish to be seen only as a sibling. However, this message often fails to deter her stepbrothers, whose romantic feelings for her only grow stronger, causing conflict among them and leading Ema to feel guilty, believing she is the outsider who has disrupted their peace.
Her primary role in the story is to be the catalyst and central figure around whom the drama and romantic tensions of the Asahina household revolve. She is a dedicated student who enjoys playing video games, especially the zombie-themed games produced by her stepbrother Natsume’s company. Ema shares a very close and protective bond with her pet squirrel, Juli, who has been her companion since childhood. Juli is fiercely protective of her and calls her by the nickname Chi or Chii-chan. She is one of the only two people who can understand Juli when he speaks, the other being her stepbrother Louis.
Key relationships shape her experience significantly. She is a devoted daughter to her adoptive father, calling him Papa, and remains loving towards him even after learning she is not his biological child. She forms distinct bonds with each of her thirteen stepbrothers, who range in age and profession, and all of whom eventually develop romantic feelings for her. A notable turning point in her development occurs when she discovers she is adopted while preparing a passport. Initially, she is deeply shocked and feels like an unwanted child, but she eventually recovers from the revelation with the support of her stepbrothers, particularly Louis and Natsume. This experience helps her realize that Rintarou’s love for her is what truly defines their father-daughter relationship. Her journey explores her struggle to maintain a platonic family bond while navigating the complicated romantic affection from her stepbrothers. In the light novel continuity, Ema ultimately chooses to pursue a romantic relationship with her stepbrother Subaru.
