Description
Hikaru Asahina is the fourth son of the Asahina family, born on August 1, 1984. He stands 175 cm tall and has an O blood type. Hikaru works as a novelist, specifically writing dark or noir fiction that delves into criminal psychology. To conduct research for his novels, he lives abroad for extended periods and often resides with actual criminals to better understand their minds. For this research, he adopts women's clothing, believing that people, particularly male criminals, are more likely to confide in a woman. While in this feminine presentation, he wears dresses, makeup, nail polish, high-heeled boots, and accessories, but returns to masculine attire and speech in private. He writes under the pen name Asakawa Hikaru.
Hikaru possesses a cunning, observant, and sly personality. He enjoys teasing his brothers and provoking reactions from them, particularly regarding their romantic interest in their stepsister, Ema Hinata. Rather than actively pursuing Ema himself, Hikaru prefers to observe the dynamics among his siblings from an outside perspective. He finds amusement in framing their rivalry as a game, even going so far as to create a statistical chart or scoreboard tracking the brothers competition, which he calls Brothers Conflict. This chart assigns odds and dividends, ranking which brother has the highest chance of winning Ema's heart based on constantly fluctuating daily data. However, this detached and manipulative exterior conceals genuine care for his family, as he will intervene protectively when necessary, such as threatening a younger brother to leave Ema alone.
In the story, Hikaru appears later than most of his siblings due to his research abroad. He observes the conflicts between his brothers and Ema, often remaining in the background while making provocative comments. He calls himself the Joker, suggesting he focuses on making situations more interesting and fun rather than directly participating in the romantic competition. In the anime, he gives Ema presents from her father and stepmother, such as a pink dress and shoes. He has been known to threaten brothers like Fuuto in a low, serious voice when they overstep boundaries. In the visual novel games, particularly Passion Pink, Hikaru is a romanceable character, though his route becomes available only near the end of the story.
Regarding key relationships, Hikaru interacts with most of his brothers through teasing and provocation, particularly targeting Ukyo by disrupting his attempts to get closer to Ema. He shows a friendlier dynamic with the youngest brother, Wataru, explaining his odds chart to him in simplified terms and praising his answers about love. With Ema, Hikaru initially claims non-romantic feelings, positioning himself as a neutral observer. He frequently requests her help with his novel research, interviewing her about her life and observing her reactions to scenarios modeled after his brothers behaviors. In some adaptations, he invites her to his home to help him generate ideas for his writing. Despite his initial claims of detachment, Hikaru eventually develops genuine feelings for Ema, which he reveals in the anime and game routes. In his character route, he publishes a novel based on their interactions together as a form of confession, and the two begin a relationship.
Hikaru demonstrates notable abilities in psychological observation and manipulation. His professional work requires keen insight into human behavior, particularly the darker aspects of criminal psychology. He uses this skill to analyze the family situation, tracking emotional dynamics and predicting outcomes with statistical precision. He also shows ability in cross-dressing so convincingly that he is often mistaken for a woman, including by Ema upon their first meeting. This skill serves his research purposes by allowing him to approach interview subjects who would not otherwise trust a male investigator. He is described as having poor cooking skills, relying heavily on instant noodles for meals. He expresses nostalgia upon seeing Ema's high school uniform, as he attended the same school previously.
