TV-Series
Description
Pontarou is a raccoon boy who appears as a recurring friend in the Shimajiro anime. He comes from a wealthy family and lives in a large mansion, where he is brought up by his grandfather and the family butler, Hitsujii, because his parents live abroad. His listed hometown is in the Osaka area. His privileged upbringing strongly shapes his character: he is cheerful and proud, with a somewhat naive outlook, and he occasionally shows gaps in everyday common sense that make him stand apart from his friends.
Pontarou has two distinctive speech habits. He often begins or punctuates his remarks with the exclamation "Ehem!" and tends to end his sentences with "nanoda." These habits created a running joke when he first met Shimajiro and the others: his proud self-introduction came out as "Ehem! Pontarou!", so his new friends assumed Ehem was part of his name and called him Ehem Pontarou. He tried to correct them, but the nickname stuck for a long time, and even adults would greet him that way.
His motivations center on friendship, acceptance, and the ordinary experiences he sometimes misses out on. As an only child, he wishes for a little sister, just as Shimajiro has Hana. He also has a fondness for Mimirin; when Nyakkii once gave him a friendship chocolate, he worried that this meant Nyakkii had feelings for him and apologized to Mimirin so that he would not appear to be interested in two girls at once. Although his wealth can make him seem distant from the others, he genuinely wants to join in their activities and be treated as an ordinary friend.
Within the story, Pontarou is a recurring companion of the main group, having been created for the television side of the franchise. His age was unclear for some time, and he was initially thought to be older than Shimajiro because he did not attend the Challengeen kindergarten and because Hitsujii would order him to do homework at home. However, an episode in which he takes part in a trial enrollment at the kindergarten clarified that he is close to Shimajiro's age, around five or six years old. This trial enrollment is a notable point of development, as it brings him into the same everyday school world as the main cast.
In terms of relationships, Pontarou is a loyal friend to Shimajiro and the wider group, with a particular attachment to Mimirin. Another defining trait is his striking resemblance to the prince of Bokkuri Mountain; apart from his glasses, the two look almost identical, and he was once mistaken for the prince and carried off by the prince's underlings.
Pontarou does not possess any special powers or extraordinary abilities. His distinguishing features are his verbal mannerisms, his refined but slightly sheltered upbringing, and his gradual growth as a friend who learns to connect with the everyday world around him through shared discoveries and experiences.
