Description
Mayoi Ayase belongs to an unrecognized clan dwelling deep beneath Yumenosaki, devoid of official citizenship rights. His clan endured forced concealment after a historical defeat, instilling in him a profound fear of the outside world. A genetic illness further isolated him, preventing regular school attendance and leading to remote education. During his secluded upbringing, distant sounds of singing, dancing, and chatter from the surface ignited his fascination with idols, which he perceived as beautiful ensembles from another realm. He taught himself singing and dancing using these faint auditory cues.

Driven by curiosity, he eventually surfaced but became the subject of rumors at Yumenosaki Academy, labeled one of the school's seven mysteries. These rumors paradoxically offered him a sense of connection to the surface world he admired. Clan members facilitated his enrollment by forging necessary documents. Due to his illness and social anxiety, he avoided classes and direct interaction, navigating hidden spaces like ceilings and walls to observe students covertly. He earned the "Phantom" moniker by anonymously leaving advice notes for struggling students.

Personality-wise, he exhibits intense social anxiety, self-deprecation, and difficulty appearing in public, yet possesses a strong compulsion to help those in need. He adores fragile, childlike things and occasionally voices unfiltered intrusive thoughts, openly expressing regret and hatred for them. Despite his cowardly demeanor, he demonstrates reliability during crises. Professionally, he joined the idol unit ALKALOID under STARMAKER PRODUCTION. His singing voice features deep, wavering tones, resulting in performances described as soft and lingering.

In the film "Road to Show!!", he visits New York with other idols. During a Metropolitan Museum of Art excursion with groupmates, he witnesses a purse theft. While two companions contact police, he participates in capturing the thief, Macky. This sequence demonstrates his capacity for decisive action despite anxiety. His background includes periods of severe mental distress where he contemplated giving up, though he ultimately chose to persevere, later acknowledging this as a pivotal decision.
