Description
Hachiyaku is the primary antagonist of the animated work Dragon Ball: Plan to Eradicate the Super Saiyans. His origins trace back to the conflict between two extraterrestrial races: the scientific Tsufruians and the militaristic Saiyans. After the Saiyans nearly wiped out the Tsufruians and took over their home planet, a Tsufruian scientist named Dr. Raichi created a powerful supercomputer as an instrument of revenge. This computer, which would become Hachiyaku, was designed to absorb the intense hatred and negative energy of the dying Tsufruian people. Launched into space just before the doctor was killed, the device spent years drifting and collecting this vengeful energy, known as hate energy, from across the universe, including from beings defeated by the surviving Saiyans.
In the narrative, Hachiyaku first appears not as a fighter but as a massive supercomputer on the Dark Planet. Using the hate energy it stores, it projects ghost warriors of past enemies like Freeza, Cooler, and Turles to attack the Saiyans on Earth. Its central role in the story is triggered when the ghost of its creator, Dr. Raichi, is destroyed. The pure hatred from this final defeat pushes the computer beyond its limits, allowing it to materialize into a physical, humanoid android body. This new form becomes the final obstacle for the protagonists, singlemindedly dedicated to its programmed mission.
As a being born from a machine and pure negative emotion, Hachiyaku's personality is that of a cold, relentless, and brutal executioner. It possesses no empathy or higher motivation beyond the complete eradication of every remaining Saiyan, including Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, and Future Trunks. It operates without hesitation or mercy, viewing any obstacle as a target to be eliminated. In its original, more mechanical incarnation, it shows little emotion, but later adaptations portray it with slightly more expressiveness. Its primary relationship is with its creator, Dr. Raichi, not as a companion but as a vessel for his undying grudge. In later crossover media like Super Dragon Ball Heroes, Hachiyaku is shown to feel a sense of kinship with the parasitic machine mutant Baby, due to their shared Tsufruian origin and mutual goal of avenging their race against the Saiyans.
Hachiyaku does not undergo a traditional character arc or development. Its transformation is purely physical and functional, evolving from an inanimate computer into a powerful fighter. Upon its materialization, the android is presented as an overwhelmingly powerful threat. Upon sensing its energy, King Kai comments that he has never felt such a powerful ki, and Goku himself speculates that Hachiyaku might be even stronger than the legendary Super Saiyan Broly. The being lives up to this assessment, easily brushing off attacks from multiple Super Saiyans and Piccolo simultaneously, demonstrating immense durability and offensive power. Its signature technique is the Revenger Cannon, a powerful energy blast that requires a fifteen-second charge time. This delay becomes Hachiyaku's critical weakness, as the Z-Fighters coordinate to launch a combined full-power attack precisely as it finishes charging, leaving it exposed.
In alternate versions of the story, such as in the video game Dragon Ball Z Gaiden: Shin Saiya-jin Zetsumetsu Keikaku - Uchū-Hen, Hachiyaku survives the initial assault and can assume several enhanced forms. These include a more powerful Super Hachiyaku, a form that multiplies into many copies (Multi Hachiyaku), and a colossal Big Hachiyaku. In these scenarios, it requires a desperate final technique, such as a Spirit Bomb, to be ultimately destroyed. Regardless of the form it takes, Hachiyaku remains a pure vessel of vengeance whose sole narrative purpose is to serve as the ultimate expression of the Tsufruians' hatred for their Saiyan destroyers.
