Description
Designated Cyborg 006, his name is Chang Changku, and he is a man of Chinese origin. In most continuities, he is portrayed as being in his early forties, making him one of the oldest members of the team. Before being captured and transformed by the terrorist organization known as Black Ghost, Chang Changku lived a peaceful life as the owner and head chef of a successful restaurant. His transformation into a cyborg came as a direct result of a personal tragedy. While attempting to impress his customers with a fire-breathing trick, an accident occurred that caused his beloved restaurant to burn to the ground. Having lost his business, his home, and his livelihood all at once, he fell into a state of despair and lost consciousness. It was in this vulnerable state that agents of Black Ghost found him and took him away to be converted into a living weapon.
Despite the tragic circumstances of his creation, Chang Changku is characterized by a jovial, friendly, and warm personality. He serves as a constant source of morale for the other cyborgs, often lightening the mood with his good-natured demeanor. Alongside the team's shapeshifter, Cyborg 007, he frequently provides moments of comic relief, contrasting with the more serious and anguished members of the group. Unlike some of his comrades who struggle with their identity as artificial beings, Chang shows very little angst about his status as a cyborg, accepting his new reality with a practical and resilient spirit. However, his goofy exterior hides a serious side, particularly when it comes to his craft. He can be a strict and demanding teacher, as seen when he instructs other cyborgs on the importance and techniques of cooking.
His primary motivation is less about grand heroism and more about supporting his found family. He provides stability and normalcy to the group's often chaotic lives. His role within the team is twofold. In combat, he is a powerful offensive asset, but perhaps more importantly, he is the heart of the group's domestic life, acting as their dedicated chef. He takes immense pride in preparing hearty and delicious meals for his comrades, using food as a way to comfort and unite them. In a story filled with violence and high-stakes battles, Chang's dedication to feeding the team underscores the humanity they are fighting to protect.
In the narrative, Cyborg 006 is a loyal and reliable supporting member of the team. While the spotlight often falls on the leader, Cyborg 009, Chang is always present as a pillar of strength. He shares a particularly notable relationship with Cyborg 007. The two have a playful, love-hate friendship, with the laid-back 007 often teasing the more earnest Chang, though they trust each other implicitly. His relationships with the other cyborgs are largely defined by his role as a caretaker. Dr. Gilmore, the team's creator and father figure, has even jokingly referred to Chang as the best "team mom," a testament to his nurturing influence on the group.
Regarding his development, Chang's journey often revolves around his identity as a chef and his past. While he accepts his powers, he does not abandon his former life. In some storylines, he successfully opens a new restaurant, demonstrating his resilience and desire to rebuild what he lost. His development is subtle, focused on his growth from a man who lost everything in a tragic accident into a dependable figure who has found a new purpose and family.
His most notable ability is the power to breathe fire from his mouth. He can generate and project torrents of flame that reach temperatures of up to 3,000 degrees Celsius, which is hot enough to melt solid rock and most other substances. This power is not only useful for attacking enemies but also allows him to burrow tunnels through the earth. In some adaptations, this ability is enhanced to a form of pyrokinesis, allowing him to shape the flames into constructs such as a dragon. Aside from his combat abilities, his most significant talent is his exceptional skill as a cook, capable of creating delicious dishes from even the most meager or unappealing ingredients.
