Description
Francoise Arnoul, designated Cyborg 003, is a core member of the 00 Cyborg team. Before her transformation, she was a talented ballet dancer from France, having studied dance from a very young age with aspirations of becoming a professional. Her life was derailed when she was abducted by the Black Ghost organization, a global terrorist group that forcibly captured individuals from around the world to transform them into living weapons. In Francoise's case, her capture was orchestrated through a fraudulent contest or a staged encounter that promised a career opportunity in dance.
As a cyborg, Francoise was not designed for direct frontline combat. Instead, her cybernetic enhancements transformed her into the team’s primary reconnaissance asset. She is equipped with telescopic and x-ray vision, allowing her to see objects and people from miles away and through solid structures. These abilities are complemented by superhuman hearing that can detect minute sounds from vast distances, effectively making her a living, mobile radar system. This sensory capability is the cornerstone of her role, as she is responsible for detecting incoming threats, locating enemies, and coordinating the team's battle strategy from a safe position.
In terms of personality, Francoise is known for being gentle, compassionate, and deeply pacifistic. She consistently prefers to resolve conflicts through dialogue and reason, viewing violence as an absolute last resort. This empathetic nature makes her the moral center of the group. She naturally assumes the role of the "big sister" to her fellow cyborgs, offering emotional support and acting as a calming influence. This is especially evident in her relationship with Cyborg 001, the infant Ivan Whisky, whom she often protects and cares for as if he were her own child.
Her key relationships are central to the narrative. She shares a deep and often unspoken romantic connection with Joe Shimamura, Cyborg 009. While both characters are frequently shy or hesitant to openly express their feelings, their bond is a recurring theme, with Francoise often serving as the one person who can reach Joe on an emotional level and temper his more impulsive tendencies. She is fiercely loyal to the entire team, but her trust and affection for Joe are particularly pronounced.
Francoise's development is marked by her struggle to reconcile her human identity with the reality of her cybernetic body. Like many of her teammates, she was placed into a cryogenic state shortly after being transformed, as Black Ghost's early technology was not yet stable. This means she is chronologically much older, potentially in her sixties, despite retaining the physical appearance of a teenager or young woman. This lost time and her shattered dream of becoming a ballerina are sources of deep personal trauma that she continually processes. Over the course of the story, she grows from a shy and panicked victim of her powers, which initially caused her severe sensory overload, into a confident and indispensable member of the team. In some storylines, her abilities are further expanded, granting her psychic powers such as clairvoyance, precognition, and telepathy, which elevate her strategic importance even further.
