Judy Ong
Description
Judy Ong, also known as Judy Ongg, is a Taiwanese-Japanese singer, actress, and artist who performed voice work in anime during the 1960s. Born in Taipei, Taiwan, on January 24, 1950, she moved to Japan at a young age and began her career in entertainment as a child, eventually attending Sophia University in Tokyo. Outside of her acting work, Ong is recognized as a multi-disciplinary talent, a successful recording artist, and a skilled woodblock printmaker.
Ong is best known in the voice acting field for her role as Cyborg 003, the character Francoise Arnoul, in the early anime adaptations of Shotaro Ishinomori's classic manga Cyborg 009. She first voiced the character in the original 1966 theatrical film Cyborg 009, directed by Yugo Serikawa and produced by Toei Animation. She reprised this role the following year in the 1967 film Cyborg 009 and the Monster Wars, also known as Cyborg 009: Kaijuu Sensou. These films represent the primary known entries in her limited anime voice acting filmography.
While the details of specific collaborations or a broader career as a voice actor are not extensively documented, Ong performed these roles during her youth. At the time of the first Cyborg 009 film, she was approximately sixteen years old. Her voice work appears to have been concentrated in this period, and she is not known for a large volume of anime roles beyond this specific character.
The most notable achievements in Judy Ong's career lie outside of voice acting. She is a highly accomplished actress in live-action cinema, having won the Golden Horse Award for Best Actress in 1972 for her performance in The Bride and I. In music, she made history as the first international artist to win the prestigious Japan Record Award in 1979 for the song魅せられて (Miserarete). While her direct contributions to anime are confined to a handful of films, her performance as Cyborg 003 in the influential and long-running Cyborg 009 franchise remains a significant footnote in the history of anime voice acting, captured in the medium's formative years.
