Description
Kyoko Honda, originally Kyoko Katsunuma, endured a deeply troubled childhood characterized by emotional neglect. Her parents prioritized outward appearances over genuine family bonds, fostering profound loneliness that drove her to join a gang in her early teens. She rose to lead an all-female kamikaze squad nicknamed "The Red Butterfly," a name inspired by the resemblance of motorcycle taillights to red butterflies at night. Her involvement included violent acts, bullying, and frequent truancy, culminating in her parents disowning her after a severe gang-related beating landed her in the hospital.

Her life transformed upon meeting Katsuya Honda, a student teacher at her middle school. During a faculty confrontation, Katsuya intervened, identifying her underlying loneliness and need for acceptance. This sparked an unconventional relationship where Katsuya, despite being an adult, regularly met with the 14-year-old Kyoko, assisting her studies and offering emotional support. He affectionately nicknamed her "Ms. No Eyebrows" due to her drawn-on eyebrows. Motivated by his influence, Kyoko resolved to leave the gang and pursue education, facing violent opposition from her former members. After her parents formally disowned her following the hospitalization, Katsuya confronted them and proposed marriage; Kyoko left with him.

Kyoko and Katsuya married without familial approval and eventually settled by the sea. Kyoko initially expressed deep insecurity about motherhood due to her past, but Katsuya reassured her. Their daughter, Tohru Honda, was born, and the family lived happily until Katsuya's sudden death from pneumonia when Tohru was three. This loss plunged Kyoko into severe depression; she neglected Tohru and attempted suicide by drowning. Standing at the ocean's edge, observing a mother and child, triggered her realization of Tohru's need for her. She returned home to find Tohru waiting and vowed to dedicate her life to her daughter.

As a single mother, Kyoko underwent significant personal growth, becoming known for her wisdom, emotional intelligence, and cheerful demeanor. She raised Tohru with the philosophy that everyone needs to feel needed, profoundly shaping Tohru's outlook. Kyoko extended her guidance to others, helping Arisa Uotani leave her gang and offering support to Saki Hanajima. Her relationship with Kyo Sohma, whom she met as a child, was particularly impactful; recognizing his loneliness, she urged him to protect Tohru, a promise that haunted him after her death.

Kyoko died in a traffic accident several months before the main series begins. Kyo Sohma was present during her final moments but hesitated to intervene due to his curse. Her last words, initially perceived as "I'll never forgive you," were later revealed in a flashback to be a charge to Kyo: "I'll never forgive you if you don’t keep your promise to protect Tohru." Her legacy endured through Tohru, who frequently recalled her mother's teachings, and through those she influenced.
