Description
Cynthia Landlavizar is a ten-year-old girl with blonde hair and green eyes who serves as a maid in the Hanaukyo mansion. She is small in stature, standing approximately 1.28 meters tall, and is considered the youngest yet one of the most intelligent members of the household staff. A defining trait of Cynthia is that she rarely speaks during the day, communicating primarily through gestures, breathing sounds, and other non-verbal cues. Despite this silence, she has no trouble making herself understood and often accompanies Taro Hanaukyo, the young master of the mansion, showing him around the estate.
Cynthia’s quiet demeanor and unique condition stem from a troubled past. She was a child prodigy whose exceptional intelligence was exploited by her parents for their own gain before they ultimately abandoned her. This traumatic experience led to the development of a second personality named Grace as a psychological defense mechanism. Grace is the opposite of Cynthia in nearly every way. While Cynthia is innocent, childlike, and non-verbal, Grace is vocal, assertive, stubborn, and more mature. She typically manifests at night while Cynthia sleeps and takes full responsibility for the mansion’s computer and data security operations. In this role, Grace is the head of the Information Division, and she designed and maintains the MEMOL supercomputer system, which serves as the technological core of the Hanaukyo estate. Her work is vital to the mansion’s infrastructure, requiring intense focus and advanced technical expertise that she performs during her nighttime shifts.
The two personalities are aware of each other and can communicate internally to some extent, but they typically alternate control of their shared body without overlapping consciousness. Cynthia functions during daylight hours, attempting to reclaim a sense of normal childhood, while Grace takes over at night to fulfill her duties. However, this arrangement places a significant physical and mental strain on their body, a complication exacerbated by Grace’s tendency to overwork herself during her periods of control. The same intelligence that allows Grace to manage the mansion’s systems also contributes to this unsustainable pressure.
Cynthia shares a close bond with the head maid, Mariel, and develops a trusting relationship with Taro, who comes to see her as a younger sister rather than a servant. Taro’s kind and accepting nature is key to her development, as he treats both Cynthia and Grace with respect and understanding. A significant moment in her story occurs when Taro discovers Grace during her nighttime activities, leading to a greater understanding of their shared existence and helping to alleviate some of the emotional distress associated with their condition. Despite the challenges, Cynthia is integrated into the maid team, and Grace’s contributions are essential for the stability of the Hanaukyo household, with their narrative focusing on the ongoing management of their dual identity and the toll it takes on their physical well-being.
