Description
Satoru Kanzaki is a central antagonist and a pivotal character, defined by a deep-seated jealousy and ambition that directly sets the story's primary conflict in motion. His background is intertwined with that of the protagonist, Shin Kazama, as the two grew up together in the same orphanage. This shared childhood forged a bond of friendship, but for Kanzaki, it also became the foundation for a powerful inferiority complex. He harbored intense resentment towards Shin, who consistently seemed to surpass him both professionally and in love.

This envy forms the core of Kanzaki's personality and motivations. Outwardly, he maintained the facade of a close and reliable friend, but internally he was consumed by a lust for power and a desire to destroy everything Shin held dear. His primary motivation is not merely professional advancement but a personal and vindictive conquest over Shin. When the two were completing their pilot training in Paris, Kanzaki exploited Shin's celebratory intoxication, tricking him into signing enlistment papers for a mercenary air force in the war-torn Kingdom of Asran, a hellish place known as Area 88. This act was designed to eliminate Shin and claim the future that was meant to be his: a career at Yamato Airlines and a romance with Ryoko Tsugumo, the airline president's daughter.

Kanzaki's role in the story is that of the primary architect of Shin's downfall and a recurring, shadowy mastermind. After securing Shin's exile, he manipulates his way to power. He secretly conspires with an aircraft manufacturer, Maxwell International, to acquire shares of Yamato Airlines in a hostile takeover. He blackmails Ryoko Tsugumo, leveraging her desperate attempts to free Shin by demanding sexual favors in exchange for mediating the sale of her shares, actions driven more by a desire to conquer her spirit than by mere lust. Upon learning that Shin has survived the mercenary army, Kanzaki sends assassins, such as a pilot named Charlie, to Area 88 to finish the job.

Kanzaki's key relationships are defined by manipulation and rivalry. His relationship with Shin is the story's axis, moving from false friendship to open, obsessive hatred. His pursuit of Ryoko is a tool to wound Shin, an attempt to claim the woman his rival loves. His alliance with the Sicilian mafia don Giuseppe Farina demonstrates his willingness to ally with the criminal underworld to achieve his goals, ultimately betraying and poisoning Farina to seize control of his arms-dealing empire for a project called Project 4, which aimed to profit from perpetual global warfare.

Throughout the narrative, Kanzaki undergoes significant development, escalating from a scheming corporate raider to a full-fledged war criminal. After becoming president of Yamato Airlines, his cost-cutting measures lead to a catastrophic crash of a defective airliner, resulting in massive loss of life and the exposure of his embezzlement and fraud, leading to his arrest in the OVA version. However, the manga continues his descent. He escapes justice, becomes the adopted son of a mafia boss, and takes control of the Asranian rebel forces, massacring their leadership and turning the country into his personal staging ground for regional conquest. He dreams of monopolizing strategic resources like the Suez Canal and oil routes. In his final, desperate act, he engages Shin in a one-on-one dogfight over the desert and is killed, a death that mirrors the self-destructive nature of his lifelong obsession.

Regarding notable abilities, Kanzaki is a highly skilled civilian pilot, having been a captain for Yamato Airlines. He demonstrates considerable skills in strategic planning, corporate and political manipulation, and psychological warfare. While he pilots a military jet, an F/A-18, in the final confrontation, he notably lacks formal combat pilot training, which highlights his recklessness and all-consuming drive. His true talents lie not in aerial dogfighting, but in orchestrating the complex schemes that send others to fight and die for his ambitions.
