Description
Lyra Orpheus is a character from the first Saint Seiya animated film, Saint Seiya: Evil Goddess Eris. He is one of the five Ghost Saints known as the Ghost Five, a group of deceased Silver Saints resurrected by the goddess Eris to serve her in her bid to conquer the world. In life, Orpheus was a legendary musician, a Silver Saint of the Lyra constellation, and his identity is inspired by the mythical Greek musician Orpheus. He is an exclusive character to this film and should not be confused with the later manga character Orphée, who also bears the Lyra Cloth but has a separate origin and story.
Orpheus is first encountered by the Bronze Saint Shun of Andromeda in a peaceful flower field, where he is playing a gentle melody on his lyre. Despite the serene setting, Orpheus is a loyal servant of Eris, having accepted her offer of a new life in exchange for his allegiance. His motivation stems from a desire to live again, having been brought back from death, and he shows little regard for honor or the cause he once served as a Saint of Athena. He is willing to use his musical abilities to kill his former comrades without hesitation, displaying a cold and pragmatic demeanor. When Shun confronts him, Orpheus ensnares him in the strings of his Stringer Requiem, attempting to kill him. However, Shun is saved by his brother Ikki of Phoenix, who engages Orpheus in battle.
Orpheus reveals to Ikki that he feels no fear of hell, as he has already experienced death and being brought back, and he explains his pact with Eris: a new existence in exchange for fighting for her. He attempts to use the same technique on Ikki, but Ikki, disgusted by Orpheus's lack of honor, destroys the strings of his lyre with his Cosmos and then kills him with the Ho Yoku Tensho technique. Orpheus shows no development or redemption; he remains a servant of Eris until his final defeat.
His key relationship is with Eris, the goddess who restored him to life, and he forms part of her Ghost Five alongside Orion Jager, Sagitta Maya, Southern Cross Kristos, and Scutum Jan. His interactions with the Bronze Saints are antagonistic, with no personal connection beyond the battlefield.
Orpheus's most notable ability is the Stringer Requiem, a technique that extends the strings of his lyre to bind and slice his opponent, wrapping around them like a lethal cocoon while the music plays a requiem. The strings are imbued with his Cosmos and are sharp enough to cut through Cloth and flesh. He relies entirely on his lyre for combat, and when its strings are severed or destroyed, his offensive capabilities are neutralized. He also has a gentle musical skill that can lull those who hear it into a false sense of peace, as seen when he first plays for Shun.
