Description
Lady Isabel, also known as Atena, is the reincarnation of the goddess Athena in the anime Saint Seiya: Evil Goddess Eris. She is the adopted granddaughter of the late Mitsumasa Kido and the de facto leader of the Saints who protect Earth. In this film, she is depicted as a young woman with long lilac hair and a calm, noble bearing, often dressed in a white gown. Her background as a mortal host for a divine spirit is established: she grew up as a wealthy heiress but carries the burden of her godly identity, which she fully accepts to safeguard humanity.
Her personality in the story is compassionate, courageous, and selfless. She genuinely cares for the children at the Star Children Academy orphanage and treats her Saints with warmth and trust. She does not act arrogantly despite her divine status; instead, she shows humility and a willingness to sacrifice herself for the greater good. Her primary motivation is to prevent the evil goddess Eris from plunging the world into chaos. She is determined to stop Eris’s plan even at the cost of her own life.
In the narrative, Lady Isabel becomes the central target of Eris’s scheme. Eris possesses a young woman named Eri Aizawa, then kidnaps Athena and takes her to a hidden sanctuary. Using the Golden Apple of Discord, Eris begins draining Athena’s life energy to complete her own resurrection and revive an army of Ghost Saints. Lady Isabel is kept captive, suspended above the apple, slowly losing her power. Throughout the ordeal, she remains conscious and communicates mentally with her Saints, encouraging them to fight. In the climax, when Seiya hesitates to shoot the arrow at the apple for fear of hitting her, she tells him to strike without hesitation, showing her absolute trust in him and her readiness to die if it means saving the world.
Key relationships in the movie center on her bond with the Bronze Saints, especially Seiya. She sees them not merely as warriors but as dear friends and allies. She also has a brief but meaningful connection with Eri, the young orphan who is used as Eris’s vessel; Lady Isabel’s rescue ultimately frees Eri from possession. Her relationship with the other gods is adversarial: Eris is her ancient foe, a half-sister in mythological terms who seeks revenge for past defeat.
Character development within this film is subtle but present. At the start, Lady Isabel is shown as a kind overseer of the orphanage. After being kidnapped, she endures the draining of her energy without despair. Her faith in the Saints never wavers, and by the end, she is restored and walks away with them, symbolizing the triumph of hope over discord.
Her notable abilities are those of the goddess Athena. She possesses immense cosmic energy (cosmo), which Eris attempts to steal. She can sense danger and communicate telepathically with her Saints across great distances. Her divine protection shields her Saints, and her mere presence inspires them to surpass their limits. In this movie, however, she does not engage in combat; her power is shown indirectly through the strength she lends to her followers. Ultimately, her role is that of the beacon who must be saved, and her sacrifice catalyzes the heroes’ victory.
