Description
Jaga de Orion, also known as Jaguar or Jager of Orion, is a fictional character from the anime film Saint Seiya: Evil Goddess Eris. He was originally a legendary Silver Saint who served the goddess Athena in a past Holy War. In his mortal life, Jaga was considered one of the most powerful and honored warriors of his generation, having achieved great feats and prestige. However, upon his death and entry into the realm of the dead, he discovered that his name and legacy had been completely forgotten by the living. This anguish of being consigned to oblivion became the defining torment of his afterlife. When the wicked goddess Eris was revived, she sought to recruit powerful warriors to serve as her Ghost Saints. She offered Jaga a resurrection and a new body in exchange for his loyalty and servitude. Driven by his deep-seated bitterness and a desire to once again experience the glory and prestige he possessed in life, Jaga readily accepted her offer, willingly selling his soul to the goddess of discord.
In terms of personality, Jaga is a confident and ruthless combatant who takes immense pride in his own power. He fights with an intensity and implacability that reflects his experience as a warrior of legend. He seems to derive genuine enjoyment from a challenging battle, finding excitement when facing a worthy opponent, as seen during his fight with Ikki of Phoenix, whom he considers a formidable and thrilling adversary. Despite his ferocity, he does not lack a degree of honor. In his final moments, after being defeated, he acknowledges Pegasus Seiya as a true Saint of Athena, showing that he retains a warrior's respect for a worthy victor. Jaga holds a cynical and contemptuous view of friendship, believing that caring for and relying on comrades is a weakness that prevents a warrior from attaining true power. He sees the bonds between the Bronze Saints as a futile sentimentality that will only lead to their downfall, showing a stark contrast to the core values of Athena's protectors.
Jaga's primary motivation is the recovery of his lost renown. He is a tragic figure defined by his pride and the emptiness of being forgotten. Having tasted greatness and then suffered the indignity of obscurity, he pursues power as a means to restore his former status and to impose his strength on the world of the living once more. He confronts the Bronze Saints who have come to rescue Athena not out of personal malice toward them, but as the ultimate test to prove his supremacy and to carve his legend back into history. His role in the story is that of the final guardian of the evil goddess Eris. He is the mightiest of the five Ghost Saints she resurrects, acting as their leader and her last line of defense. While the other four Ghost Saints engage and are defeated by the Bronze Saints individually, Jaga waits within Eris's temple, emerging only when Seiya finally reaches the heart of the sanctuary.
Key relationships define his role in the narrative. His relationship with Eris is a transactional one of servitude for power; he is utterly loyal as long as she provides him with the opportunity to fight and achieve glory. His primary antagonistic relationship is with the Bronze Saints, particularly Seiya and Ikki. He serves as a dark mirror to Ikki of Phoenix. Both are exceptionally powerful warriors with similar fighting styles and formidable physical strength, creating a fierce rivalry. During their battle, Jaga questions Ikki's dedication to his fallen comrade Seiya, leading to a direct philosophical clash where Ikki explains that friendship and fighting for peace are the true sources of a Saint's strength. Jaga dismisses this concept, underscoring his isolation and his purely self-serving motivation for fighting. Throughout the film, Jaga undergoes a subtle but significant development. Initially, he is dismissive of the Bronze Saints, seeing them as weak and naive. His confidence remains unshaken even as he battles Ikki to a standstill. However, after Ikki's explanation of friendship and witnessing Seiya survive a fatal fall and ascend to new power by donning the Sagittarius Gold Cloth, Jaga is finally forced to reassess his worldview. Though he does not renounce his own path, in his defeat he finally recognizes the merit in his opponents, acknowledging Seiya as a true warrior and redeeming his own character with a final display of respect.
As a Silver Saint protected by the constellation of Orion, the Hunter, Jaga possesses immense physical strength and combat prowess, considered to be on par with the most powerful Bronze Saint, Ikki of Phoenix. He is incredibly fast and can evade attacks like Pegasus Seiya's Pegasus Meteor Fist with ease. His signature and most notable ability is the Megaton Meteor Crush. To perform this technique, Jaga leaps high into the air, curls his body into a compact sphere, and descends upon his opponent like a crashing meteor, surrounded by a powerful violet energy. The impact delivers a devastating physical blow capable of crushing his enemy with the force of a megaton explosion. He demonstrates enough skill with this attack to not only execute it but also to absorb and nullify the flames of Ikki's Phoenix Wings technique, converting the heat into energy to power his own assault.
