Description
Freja is a character who appears exclusively in the 1988 anime film Saint Seiya: The Heated Battle of the Gods. She is a young woman from Asgard, the frigid northern land under the protection of the god Odin. Her name is derived from Freyja, the Norse goddess of love, beauty, and war. She resides in Asgard but does not live in the Valhalla Palace, the seat of its ruler. Freja is the sister of Frey, a priest of Odin who serves the pontiff, Dolbar.

In the story, Freja and her brother Frey are present when the goddess Athena and her Bronze Saints, Seiya, Shun, and Shiryu, arrive at the Valhalla Palace seeking their lost friend, the Cygnus Saint Hyoga. Frey is charmed by Athena and, with Dolbar’s permission, asks Freja to escort her to safety. Freja accompanies the group and offers them refuge for the night. It is during this time that she begins to sense that something is seriously wrong in Asgard.

Freja does not possess any notable combat abilities or special powers. Her role in the narrative is primarily as a supportive figure and witness to the events unfolding around her. She is perceptive and observant, able to detect the malice in the actions of the Asgardian soldiers when they move against Athena. Her primary motivation is the well-being of her homeland and loyalty to her brother. Although her own agency is limited, she provides crucial assistance by offering shelter to the Saints and later watching over them.

Her most significant relationship is with her brother, Frey. She trusts him completely and follows his lead in aiding Athena. Freja is present throughout the film’s climactic battle between the Bronze Saints, the corrupted God Warriors, and the pontiff Dolbar. She watches helplessly as Frey, a man of peace who despises unnecessary bloodshed, is forced into action. After being imprisoned by Dolbar for his suspicions, Frey escapes and makes the ultimate sacrifice. He climbs the great statue of Odin and plunges his sword into it, destroying the structure and the dimensional prison holding Athena. Freja witnesses her brother’s heroic death.

Following Frey’s sacrifice and Dolbar’s defeat, the ruins of the Odin statue give birth to the legendary tree Yggdrasil. The frozen and barren land of Asgard begins to bloom with life, signifying the end of the evil influence. In the final scene, Freja is seen departing together with Athena and the Bronze Saints, leaving the battlefield behind and walking into a newly verdant landscape. This version of the character is distinct from the Freya who appears in the later Asgard arc of the television anime series, as the events of this film exist outside the main continuity.
