Description
Durval is the earthly representative of the god Odin and the ruler of the realm of Asgard in the film Saint Seiya: The Heated Battle of the Gods. His name originates from the Old Norse Þórvaldr, also known as Thorvald, which means ruler of thunder, derived from the words for Thor and king. He is commonly associated with the god Heimdall, whose divine robe he wears. Standing 195 centimeters tall and weighing 94 kilograms, he is a physically imposing figure.

As Odin’s proxy on Earth, Durval initially presents himself as a benevolent and noble leader, welcoming the goddess Athena and her Bronze Saints to his palace in search of the missing Cygnus Hyoga. This hospitality, however, is a facade that conceals a deeply ambitious and treacherous personality. Durval is a calculating and power-hungry individual who has harbored a secret plan to conquer the Sanctuary of Athena. His ultimate motivation is to use his position and power to dominate the goddess’s realm, demonstrating a profound arrogance and a willingness to deceive and manipulate anyone to achieve his goal. He is shown to be cruel and disloyal, even to his own subordinates, whom he despsises.

Within the story, Durval plays the central antagonistic role. When Frey, one of his vassals, expresses concern over the ambitions of the God Warrior Loki, Durval responds by attacking and imprisoning him. Using the false claim that Hyoga has been found, Durval lures Athena to the Valhalla Palace, where he reveals his true intentions. Unable to destroy the goddess’s physical body, he instead imprisons her. Using his technique called the Odin Shield, he seals Saori onto the bow of a Viking ship at the foot of the great Odin statue, draining her life energy.

His key relationships are defined by his conspiracy. Loki serves as his right-hand man among the God Warriors. Frey acts as a narrative foil, whose loyalty to Odin and Asgard ultimately leads him to betray Durval’s scheme to save Athena. Durval also captures Hyoga, subjecting him to brainwashing to serve as a servant and a new God Warrior named Midgard. When the Bronze Saints confront him, Durval battles them directly. His power proves to be immense, on par with that of a Gold Saint, as he is able to move at the speed of light and easily shatter the Bronze Cloths of Pegasus Seiya and his allies. As the battle concludes, Durval attempts to kill Frey as he scales the Odin statue to rescue Athena. He is ultimately defeated when Seiya, wearing the Sagittarius Gold Cloth, pierces him with the golden arrow. As for notable abilities, Durval commands several powerful techniques. The Odin Shield drags the enemy to the feet of the Odin statue, where their life force is continuously drained, a spell that can only be broken by destroying the statue’s brain or by Durval’s own will. He can generate a red gravitational pressure wave, known as a Shockwave, which acts as his primary attack and is capable of easily destroying Bronze Cloths. He also possesses a brainwashing technique used to turn Hyoga into his servant, and he wields a sword in combat.
