Description
Berenike di Coma is a character from the anime film Saint Seiya: Legend of Crimson Youth. He is a warrior who serves the sun god Abel as a Corona Saint, a class of divine protectors who have served their master since mythological times. His name and constellation, Coma Berenices, are derived from the historical figure Queen Berenice II of Egypt, whose legendary sacrifice of her long hair was said to have been placed in the heavens by the goddess Aphrodite. This celestial origin forms the basis for his unique combat abilities.
In terms of appearance, Berenike is depicted as a tall, toned young man with fair skin, blonde hair cut to neck length, and blue eyes. His armor, the Coma Berenices Cloth, reflects the constellation's theme and is noted for generating intense heat as part of its nature as a Corona Cloth created by Abel. This heat is said to repel ordinary attacks and can be used as a defensive shield around his body. His personality is defined by pride and a volatile temper. While he can initially appear calm, he has a tendency to explode with arrogance, taunting his opponents and ruthlessly crushing their confidence by demonstrating the overwhelming power of his abilities. He holds his allegiance to Abel above all else and has no tolerance for insults or disobedience, whether from enemies or allied warriors.
Within the story, Berenike serves as one of Abel's primary escorts alongside his fellow Corona Saints, Atlas and Jao. He plays a key role in subduing the resurrected Gold Saints who rebel against Abel, defeating Aquarius Camus and Capricorn Shura in battle alongside his comrades. Later, he confronts the Bronze Saint Dragon Shiryu, defeating him after Shiryu's victory over Cancer Deathmask. His most significant confrontation is with the Swan Hyoga. When Hyoga refuses Abel's command to build an ice tomb for Athena, the enraged Berenike steps forward to fight. During this battle, he cruelly taunts Hyoga by revealing that he personally killed Hyoga's teacher, Aquarius Camus, as punishment for his rebellion. This act deepens the personal stakes of the conflict.
Berenike's development in the narrative is limited, as he functions as a powerful antagonist who does not undergo a change of heart. His role is defined by his unshakable loyalty to Abel and his dismissal of human sentiment, which he views as weakness. His key relationships are primarily hierarchical: absolute devotion to his master Abel and contemptuous opposition to the Saints of Athena. His rivalry with Hyoga is the most developed interaction, as Berenike underestimates the Swan Saint's resolve, which ultimately leads to his downfall. He mocks Hyoga's emotional attachment to his mother and master, failing to recognize that these bonds are the source of Hyoga's strength.
Berenike wields several notable abilities common to Corona Saints, including command of the Seventh Sense, which grants him movement and combat speed at the speed of light. His signature technique is the Golden Hair of Death. With this attack, he launches countless strands of his own hair to ensnare an opponent. The hair is incredibly strong and tightens with the victim's struggles, eventually channeling Berenike's own cosmos energy to burn and destroy the enemy's body and armor from the outside in. He also possesses a high resistance to cold-based attacks, which initially allows him to withstand Hyoga's freezing techniques. However, Hyoga ultimately defeats him by raising his cosmos to its absolute limit, unleashing a powerful attack that freezes Berenike and his Cloth solid, shattering him into pieces.
