Description
Berengue de Koma Berenice is a character who appears in the anime film Saint Seiya: Legend of Crimson Youth. He serves as one of the three Corona Saints, elite warriors in the service of the sun god Abel, also known as Phoebus Apollo. His name and his Cloth take their origin from the constellation Coma Berenices, which in turn is named after the historical Queen Berenice II of Egypt. According to legend, the queen sacrificed her long hair as a votive offering to ensure her husband's safe return from war, and the gods placed the lock of hair in the sky as a constellation. The name Berenice itself is derived from Greek, meaning "the one who brings victory".

In terms of appearance, Berengue is depicted as a warrior with fair skin, short blond hair, and long sideburns. He carries himself with the air of a knowledgeable and experienced man, which contributes to his overall demeanor of arrogance. As a Corona Saint, his rank is equivalent to that of a Gold Saint, and he possesses power and abilities that allow him to challenge even the most formidable of Athena's warriors. He fights wearing the Coma Berenices Cloth, a set of armor granted to him by Abel himself.

Berengue's personality is defined by intense pride, arrogance, and a quick-tempered nature. He holds his own abilities and his loyalty to Abel in the highest regard, and he does not tolerate insults or challenges to his superiority. Despite this, he is not portrayed as being purely evil or malicious; rather, his primary motivation is to serve and protect his master, Abel, and he fights against the Bronze Saints solely to fulfill this duty. He is a man who offers his opponents a chance to repent and swear allegiance to Abel, but this offer is presented with condescension, as he looks down on those he considers beneath him. He is also shown to be a cunning combatant who uses psychological tactics, such as taunting his enemies about the deaths of their masters, to gain an advantage in battle.

Berengue's primary motivation is to carry out Abel's will to cleanse the Earth of humanity, which his god considers corrupt. He believes fully in Abel's cause and acts as a ruthless enforcer of his commands. His role in the story is that of an antagonist who directly confronts the Bronze Saints. Early in the film, he and his fellow Corona Saints, Atlas of Carina and Jaoh of Lynx, easily defeat the Gold Saints Capricorn Shura and Aquarius Camus after those two rebel against Abel. Later, he ambushes and defeats Dragon Shiryu immediately after the Bronze Saint has vanquished his opponent, Deathmask of Cancer, showcasing his opportunistic and pragmatic fighting style.

His most significant role comes in his direct confrontation with Cygnus Hyoga. When Hyoga refuses Abel's order to build an ice coffin for the fallen Athena, Berengue steps forward to fight the Bronze Saint. In this battle, his arrogance is on full display, as he reveals that he personally killed Aquarius Camus, Hyoga's beloved master, for his act of rebellion. This confession is a deliberate tactic meant to break Hyoga's spirit. Berengue has a key relationship with Camus, his victim, and with Hyoga, whom he seeks to destroy both physically and psychologically. He serves Abel alongside his fellow Corona Saints, Atlas and Jaoh, with whom he fights in coordination.

In terms of character development, Berengue remains a static character throughout the film; he is a confident and powerful servant of Abel who never doubts his cause. His development is not internal but serves to highlight the growth of his opponent, Hyoga. The development in this arc belongs to Hyoga, who, despite the immense psychological pressure and the revelation of his master's death, ultimately finds the strength to overcome Berengue's power by remembering the teachings of his mother. Berengue's downfall occurs precisely because his arrogance causes him to underestimate the resilience of the Bronze Saint. He is ultimately defeated when Hyoga, in a final surge of determination, unleashes the full power of his Aurora Thunder Attack, which completely freezes Berengue and shatters his Coma Berenices Cloth.

Berengue's notable abilities are centered on his unique constellation. His signature technique is the Golden Hair of Death, which allows him to launch countless strands of his hair at an opponent. These energized strands are incredibly strong and are used to ensnare and immobilize the target completely. Once trapped, the enemy is subjected to immense pressure while the hair channels Berengue's cosmos into the victim, burning them and their armor from the inside out. This technique proved highly effective against Hyoga, nearly destroying the Cygnus Cloth. Additionally, he has shown a notable resistance to ice-based attacks, as Hyoga's initial Diamond Dust and Aurora Thunder attacks had little to no effect on him before his final defeat. Berengue is also a capable physical combatant, able to fight on equal terms with Gold Saints.
