Description
Dhaos is a character from the planet Derris-Kharlan, where he serves as the leader of one of its largest countries and holds the title of prince. His journey begins when a devastating war breaks out between two smaller nations on his homeworld. To gain an advantage, one faction deploys a powerful magitechnology weapon known as the Mana Cannon. The blast unleashes catastrophic consequences, draining the planet's mana and causing the Great Kharlan Tree, the source of all life on Derris-Kharlan, to wither and die. Faced with the extinction of his people, Dhaos reluctantly agrees to a plan proposed by his consort, Karion, to travel to the distant planet of Aselia and obtain a mana seed from its World Tree, Yggdrasill, to plant a new tree on his dying world. With insufficient mana to power the journey, Karion and his council of sorcerers sacrifice their own life force to send Dhaos across space and time, an act of devotion that he is forced to witness while being unable to intervene.

Dhaos is a complex figure, characterized by a deep sense of loyalty and a natural inclination toward diplomacy over violence. Before the tragedy that defines his mission, he is described as a kind and dignified ruler, valued by his people. His preference is to solve problems with dialogue, and he attempts to pursue a peaceful path when he first arrives on Aselia, seeking to warn the kingdom of Midgards about the dangers of magitechnology, which he recognizes as the same force that doomed his own world. However, his personality undergoes a profound change as he is branded a demon and his peaceful efforts are rejected. This leads him to adopt the role of the "Demon King" he was accused of being, becoming cold, merciless, and driven by a singular, desperate focus on his mission. Despite this transformation, his fundamental motivation never wavers: the survival of his home planet and its people. Everything he does, no matter how ruthless, is in service of this goal, making him a tragic antagonist rather than a purely evil one.

Dhaos's primary motivation is the salvation of Derris-Kharlan. He believes that by obtaining a mana seed from Yggdrasill, the World Tree of Aselia, he can reverse the slow death of his world. This mission is complicated by the fact that the advancement of magitechnology on Aselia is draining the world's mana, preventing Yggdrasill from producing a seed and also threatening the tree's life. His goal shifts from peaceful persuasion to a forceful attempt to halt this industrial revolution, even if it means conquering the kingdom of Midgards. The sacrifice of Karion and his followers weighs heavily on him, creating a powerful sense of duty and guilt. He believes their deaths must not be in vain, and this conviction drives him to commit terrible acts, such as slaughtering innocent people and starting a continent-wide war, all while believing the cost is necessary for the greater good.

In the story of Tales of Phantasia, Dhaos is the central antagonist, known throughout Aselia as the Demon King who started the Valhalla War against Midgards. He is initially presented as a monstrous sorcerer seeking to conquer the world with his army of monsters. He is responsible for numerous atrocities, including the destruction of the protagonist's hometown. The heroes, Cress, Mint, Chester, and Arche, pursue Dhaos across time to stop him, first defeating him in the present era, then pursuing him to the past, and finally confronting him in the future. It is only in his final moments, after being defeated for the last time, that Dhaos reveals his true, tragic motivations to the heroes, explaining that he was not a demon king, but a desperate leader trying to save his own dying world from the exact same kind of mana-depleting technology that Aselia was beginning to embrace.

Key relationships shape Dhaos's actions and character. His most significant bond is with his consort, Karion. Her love for him and her willingness to sacrifice herself for their world is the catalyst for his entire journey and a source of immense trauma that haunts him. On Aselia, his first and only friend is a young woman named Winona Pickford, who nurses him back to health when he first arrives, sick and disoriented from mana deprivation. Their friendship is tragically cut short when Dhaos becomes consumed by his mission, and Winona eventually joins the group that defeats him, driven to stop the madness of the man she once helped. His primary adversary is the scientist Reisen, who manipulates the king of Midgards into believing Dhaos is an invader. Reisen's propaganda creates the "Demon King" persona and fuels the conflict that Dhaos feels forced to escalate, making him a critical figure in the tragedy. His relationship with the main heroes is one of opposition until the very end, where his final revelation transforms their understanding of him from a simple villain to a tragic figure.

Dhaos undergoes a tragic character development arc from a benevolent and peace-seeking prince to a ruthless and desperate warlord. Initially, he is a leader who values diplomacy and wants only to protect his people. After the mana cannon destroys his world's tree, he is driven by guilt and a sense of duty. His first action on Aselia is to attempt a peaceful solution. However, when his warnings are ignored and he is branded an enemy, he deliberately forsakes his principles, choosing to become the monster the world already believes him to be. This decision marks his fall from grace. As his war against Midgards drags on and his goal slips further away, his mind becomes increasingly consumed by rage and madness, leading to more extreme and cruel actions, such as ordering preemptive strikes on villages. After being hunted and defeated across time, his final moments reveal he has come to see his mission as a failure, believing all the suffering he caused was for nothing. His final act is to use the last of his power to create a mana seed from his own body, a final, self-sacrificing redemption that saves his world, having learned that force alone could not achieve his goal.

Dhaos is an exceptionally powerful being, possessing formidable magical abilities and significant physical combat skills. His combat style is a mix of close-range strikes and high-level spellcasting, with notable physical attacks like Tetra Assault, a four-hit combination, and Dhaos Fang, a close-range grab. His signature techniques include Dhaos Corridor, where he slams his palm on the ground to create a force field, and Dhaos Laser, a powerful charged energy beam. He is also capable of casting high-level magic, including spells such as Explode and Meteor Swarm. Derris-Kharlan's royalty seem to naturally possess immense power; through rigorous daily training from a young age, Dhaos's abilities grew to an extraordinary level. He possesses the rare ability to travel across space-time between planets using mana, although this requires vast amounts of energy. Other abilities include flight, telepathy, creating barriers, hypnosis to bring out dark desires in others, reduced need for sleep, and the capacity to survive for over a decade without food or air. Despite his immense power, he has a notable and specific weakness to lightning-based magic, most famously the spell Indignation, also known as Psi Thunder or Divine Lightning.
