Description
Chester Barklight is a main character in the original Tales of Phantasia. He is a seventeen-year-old hunter and archer who stands 175 centimeters tall, hailing from the village of Toltus, where he lives with his younger sister, Ami. He is the best friend of the game's protagonist, Cress Albane, having grown up alongside him in their rural home.

Chester is presented as a tireless worker and a master of the bow, but his personality is defined by a complex exterior. He is often blunt, cynical, and can come across as arrogant or brash, with a tendency to argue with others. This is particularly evident in his frequent squabbles with the magician Arche Klein, for whom he initially shows an attraction but quickly develops a mutual, bickering relationship with. Beneath this rough surface, however, he is a caring individual, especially towards those who share his unfortunate circumstances. He possesses a great deal of pride, which fuels a determined and unyielding nature, making him hot-blooded when he has a clear goal to focus on.

Chester's primary motivation stems from tragedy. When the evil sorcerer Dhaos's forces attack Toltus in search of a magical pendant, Chester's sister Ami is killed alongside many villagers. Having lost his parents at a young age, Ami was his last living family member, and her death instills in him a powerful, all-consuming desire for revenge against Dhaos. He vows to join Cress in avenging their fallen loved ones.

In the story's original timeline, Chester plays a heroic but sacrificial role. When the party confronts Dhaos, the sorcerer is about to destroy the temple where they stand. Chester attacks Dhaos to buy time, allowing the mage Trinicus Morrison to transport Cress and the healer Mint back in time to learn how to defeat Dhaos. In this sequence, Chester is seemingly killed. However, due to the heroes' success in altering the past, the timeline is changed. When Cress and his party return to the exact moment of the battle, they are able to prevent the destruction of the temple, saving Chester and Morrison.

After being rescued, Chester requests to join the party, eager to uphold his vow of revenge. The other members are initially hesitant, as Chester is inexperienced compared to them. In the original version of the game, this is reflected mechanically by him joining at a very low level, though later versions add a side quest to help him catch up. Despite his late entry, Chester becomes a true member of the group, known as the Heroes of Time. His ability to grasp the complex situation involving time travel is notable, even if he often has little to say compared to his companions.

Chester's key relationship is with Cress, his lifelong friend, whose family was also killed in the attack. Throughout the journey, his relationship with Arche evolves significantly. Though they begin by openly disliking each other and frequently arguing, a sequence in the town of Ary reveals a softer side to their dynamic, and they grow much closer as the game progresses. In spin-off material, the two are depicted as a couple who eventually marry and have a son.

Chester's development is defined by overcoming his initial powerlessness and personal trauma. He begins as a grief-stricken young man whose entire world has been destroyed, only to be left behind while his best friend travels through time, gains immense experience, and becomes a legendary hero. From Chester's perspective, his friend vanishes and reappears moments later as a far more capable warrior, widening the emotional gap between them. His personal journey involves finding the resolve to not only catch up to the rest of the party in strength but also to process his guilt and grief over his sister's death, ultimately contributing to the final battle against Dhaos as a peer, not a burden.

In combat, Chester is a long-range fighter who uses a bow, covering the front-line warriors like Cress with arrows from a distance. In his original appearance, he lacked special skills and relied solely on his physical attack power, which was the highest in the game with the strongest bows. In later versions and ports, he was given a full skillset, including elemental shots, multi-hit techniques like "Wild Rain," and powerful combo attacks such as "Giga Fang." This rebalancing makes him a valuable and versatile support character, especially in the latter half of the game, with his abilities sometimes proving more useful against certain bosses than magic.
