Description
Barret Wallace is a central character who appears in the film Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, which continues the story from the events of the game Final Fantasy VII. His background is rooted in tragedy and a thirst for justice. Originally a coal miner from the village of Corel, Barret advocated for the construction of a Mako reactor by the Shinra Electric Power Company, believing it would bring prosperity to his home. However, after an accident at the plant, Shinra razed Corel to the ground, killing his wife, Myrna, and causing him to lose his right hand. In the chaos, his best friend Dyne fell to his apparent death, leaving behind his young daughter, Marlene, whom Barret adopted as his own. He later had a prosthetic gun-arm grafted to his body and founded an eco-terrorist cell of the organization AVALANCHE to exact revenge on Shinra.

By the time of Advent Children, which takes place two years after the defeat of the villain Sephiroth, Barret’s personality has evolved but his core traits remain. He is a passionate, emotionally driven, and occasionally brash individual who speaks his mind without filter. While his hot-headed temperament and booming voice are still present, his motivations have shifted significantly. No longer driven by a lust for revenge, Barret now focuses on constructive action. He travels the world to help rebuild the planet's infrastructure and search for alternative energy sources to replace Mako, the life energy that Shinra had exploited. His primary motivation remains his deep, paternal love for his adopted daughter, Marlene, and his actions are fundamentally geared toward securing a safe and prosperous future for her.

In the story of Advent Children, Barret’s role is that of a stalwart ally who returns to help his friends in their time of need. Having left Marlene in the care of Tifa Lockhart and Cloud Strife in the city of Edge, he initially operates off-screen, communicating with Cloud via phone messages about his discovery of large oil fields. He makes a dramatic return to the forefront during the film's climactic battle, arriving to assist the party in fighting the massive summoned creature Bahamut SIN. His firepower proves crucial in the fight, showcasing his unwavering commitment to protecting the planet and his found family.

Barret’s key relationships are central to his character. His most important bond is with his daughter, Marlene, for whom he wants to create a better world. He maintains a close, trusting relationship with Tifa Lockhart, who cares for Marlene in his absence. His dynamic with Cloud Strife is that of a peer and fellow warrior; while they have a history of clashing, Barret respects Cloud’s abilities and fights alongside him without hesitation. The film also shows his development from a man consumed by revenge to a global-minded protector. The novella "Case of Barret," which details the period between the game and the film, explains that he struggled with his identity as a monster due to his weapon but ultimately chose to keep his gun-arm to prevent others from having to suffer as he did.

Regarding his abilities, Barret is a powerful ranged fighter. His most notable feature is his prosthetic right arm, which in Advent Children has been upgraded from a simple gun to a sophisticated mechanical hand that can transform into a large, over-the-top firearm. In combat, he uses this weapon to unleash devastating barrages of gunfire. A specific technique he employs in the film is a powerful charged shot that functions similarly to his "Big Shot" limit break from the original game, capable of staggering even a creature as immense as Bahamut SIN. His fighting style is defined by sheer brute force and heavy firepower, making him the party's muscle.
