Description
Michio Suzumoto is the human protagonist of the anime Ultra B, a young schoolboy who lives with his family. One night, after chasing a UFO, he discovers a mysterious alien baby named Ultra B and decides to take him in as his own child, an act that surprises his household. Michio’s background is that of an ordinary boy whose life changes dramatically when he becomes the caretaker of a superpowered extraterrestrial infant.
In terms of personality, Michio is clumsy and not particularly successful at his responsibilities, often performing poorly at work or school tasks. His carelessness and lack of skill are frequently exacerbated by the well-meaning but chaotic interference of Ultra B, whose magical abilities create additional trouble. Despite this, Michio is a good-natured and earnest child who genuinely cares for the alien baby, even when the situation becomes frustrating.
His primary motivation is to look after Ultra B and integrate him into everyday life, acting as a surrogate parent figure. This role drives much of the series’ comedy and conflict, as Michio’s already shaky grasp of order is constantly upended by Ultra B’s unpredictable powers.
Within the story, Michio serves as Ultra B’s anchor to Earth and the main human character through whom the audience experiences the alien’s antics. He is the straight man to Ultra B’s mischief, and their dynamic forms the core of the narrative. His key relationships include his parents, Shinichi and Kazuyo Suzumoto, who are drawn into the chaos, as well as friends and classmates such as Takemi Aoba and Tateo Tosaka, who interact with both Michio and Ultra B.
Character development for Michio is primarily situational; he learns to cope with the constant surprises that Ultra B brings, gradually growing more accustomed to the alien’s presence and powers without ever fully mastering the situation. His notable abilities are not supernatural; rather, he demonstrates patience and resilience in enduring the daily havoc caused by Ultra B’s magic. His own lack of innate skill or superhuman traits makes him a relatable everyboy, highlighting the contrast between ordinary human limitations and extraterrestrial wonder.
