Description
Milena is the civilian identity of Sailor Nettuno, one of the Outer Sailor Guardians who appears in the anime series Sailor Moon SuperS, having previously been introduced in the preceding season Sailor Moon S. Her Japanese counterpart is Michiru Kaioh, and Milena is an adaptation name used in certain localized versions of the series. In her civilian life, Milena is a highly gifted high school student who excels in the arts, particularly as a virtuoso violinist, and is also an accomplished painter and swimmer. She is often seen as the epitome of elegance and sophistication, carrying herself with a calm, graceful, and composed demeanor that sets her apart from the more energetic Inner Guardians.

Milena's background is rooted in a deep sense of duty and destiny. Unlike the Inner Guardians who were awakened by the moon cats, she awoke to her powers independently, driven by a strong premonition of impending danger. This early awareness of her role as a guardian shapes her serious and sometimes distant personality. Her motivations are clear and unwavering: she is fully dedicated to her mission as a Sailor Guardian, willing to make difficult choices and bear heavy burdens to protect the Solar System from external threats. She possesses a strong sense of right and wrong, with a black and white approach to her duties.

Her personality is defined by a striking duality. In her daily life, Milena appears gentle, polite, and refined, yet when she transforms into Sailor Nettuno, she reveals a more ruthless and formidable side. She is capable of sharp anger and can be cold or intimidating when the situation demands it, which makes her a fearsome opponent. She is also highly intuitive and perceptive, often sensing evil or danger before it manifests. This precognitive ability is tied to her connection with the sea, as she sometimes remarks that the sea is stormy when trouble is near.

Sailor Nettuno's role in the story is that of a guardian of the outer boundaries of the Solar System, a role she shares with her closest partner, Sailor Uranus. Together, they act as a frontline defense against threats that originate from beyond the planet. In Sailor Moon SuperS, their presence is more limited compared to the previous season, as the narrative focuses more on the Inner Guardians and Chibiusa's connection with Pegasus. Nevertheless, Milena remains a steadfast ally, offering support and wisdom when needed, and her commitment to the cause never wavers.

The most significant relationship in Milena's life is with Sailor Uranus, her partner and closest companion. The two share an extremely deep bond, often described as a lesbian romantic relationship in the original source material, and they are virtually inseparable in battle and in civilian life. They trust each other implicitly and coordinate their actions with seamless synergy. Milena also has a caring, maternal side, as she and Sailor Uranus take in and raise Hotaru Tomoe, the future Sailor Saturn, treating her as their own daughter. Within the larger group of Sailor Guardians, Milena maintains a respectful but somewhat distant relationship with the Inner Guardians, though she works alongside them without hesitation when the mission calls for it.

In terms of development, Milena's character remains largely consistent throughout her appearances. Her steadfastness and resolve are her defining traits, but she also shows a softer, more vulnerable side in her private moments, particularly in her interactions with Sailor Uranus and Hotaru. She is not a character who undergoes a radical transformation; rather, her growth is seen in her deepening trust in others and her willingness to accept help, even when her instinct is to carry her burdens alone.

Sailor Nettuno's notable abilities are ocean-based and include the power to generate and manipulate seawater. Her signature attack is Deep Submerge, which unleashes a powerful tidal wave against her enemies. She also wields the Deep Aqua Mirror, one of the three Talismans, which has the ability to reveal the truth and dispel illusions. In addition to her water-based powers, she possesses precognitive abilities that allow her to foresee danger. As a guardian, she is also highly skilled in hand-to-hand combat and uses her intelligence and strategic mind to complement her physical powers. Later in the series, she attains the power to transform into Super Sailor Nettuno, granting her enhanced strength and abilities.
