Description
Morea / Sailor Jupiter, also known by her civilian name Makoto Kino, is one of the central characters in the anime Sailor Moon SuperS, which is the fourth season of the original Sailor Moon series. She is the third Sailor Guardian to be discovered by Usagi Tsukino, the protagonist, and serves as the physical powerhouse and protector among the inner group of guardians.

Her background is marked by personal loss. As a child, her parents died in an aviation accident, a tragedy that left her deeply self‑reliant and living alone. This early independence shaped her outward toughness, but it also instilled in her a strong sense of loyalty and a desire to build a family of her own. Her height and physical strength are her most noticeable traits, leading to rumors at school that she was a delinquent expelled from her previous school for fighting. In reality, she is gentle and warm‑hearted, with a clear dual nature: she is both the most physically formidable of the guardians and the most domestically inclined, enjoying cooking, baking, gardening, and flower arranging. Her dream is to marry a kind man and run a combined cake and flower shop, reflecting her nurturing side.

Her motivations are rooted in protecting those she cares about. As a Sailor Guardian, she fights to defend Earth and her friends from the threats that arise in SuperS, mainly the Dead Moon Circus. She is fiercely protective, often taking on the role of a big sister or team mother, and does not hesitate to put herself in harm’s way for others. In civilian life, she is also motivated by romance, often comparing potential love interests to a former senpai from her past, though this tendency wanes over time.

In the story of SuperS, Makoto’s role is that of a steadfast combatant. She rarely receives episodes centered solely on her personal growth, but her presence is felt in battle, where her superhuman strength and electrical abilities make her a key asset. During this season, she attains her Super Sailor Jupiter form in episode 154 after receiving the Jupiter Crystal, which upgrades both her uniform and her powers. Her signature attacks include Supreme Thunder, Sparkling Wide Pressure, and the stronger Super Supreme Thunder unleashed in her Super form.

Her key relationships are deeply woven into the group dynamic. She bonds closely with Usagi Tsukino, who was the first person to accept her without fear, and the friendship that develops is one of mutual trust and affection. She shares a supportive bond with Ami Mizuno, as seen in moments where Ami asks her to dance when Makoto is left without a partner. With Minako Aino, she forms a pair of boy‑crazy friends, often chasing romantic interests together. Her relationship with Rei Hino is more reserved but still caring. Makoto’s maternal instinct also extends to Chibiusa, the younger princess from the future.

Development for Makoto in SuperS is subtle. While she does not undergo a dramatic personality shift, her experiences in battle reinforce her confidence and her reliance on her friends. Her ability to channel her physical strength into controlled, powerful attacks grows, and she learns to trust her teammates more. The season also touches on her vulnerability when airplanes appear, a remnant of her childhood trauma, which she gradually learns to face with support from her friends.

Notable abilities include her extraordinary physical strength, which allows her to lift objects and people far heavier than a typical human can, even while ice skating. As Sailor Jupiter, she wields electrokinesis, summoning lightning bolts through an antenna on her tiara and directing them at enemies. She also has limited plant‑based powers, such as creating gusts of flower petals to blind opponents. Her combat skills are enhanced by her martial arts training, making her the most skilled hand‑to‑hand fighter among the inner guardians. In her Super form, her electrical attacks become even more potent, capable of defeating enemies that would overwhelm her earlier incarnations.

Overall, Morea / Sailor Jupiter is defined by the harmony of strength and gentleness. Her past hardships inform her fierce independence, but her true nature is one of kindness, domesticity, and unwavering loyalty to her friends, making her an indispensable member of the Sailor Guardians in the SuperS season.
