Description
Ali is a significant character from the 1962 Japanese animated feature film Arabian Nights: Sindbad no Bouken, also known as The Adventures of Sinbad or Sindbad the Sailor. In this film, Ali serves as the young sidekick and close companion to the protagonist, Sinbad. He is depicted as a boy with brown eyes and brown hair cut to ear length, often wearing a vest, an open shirt, and a turban. Together, Ali and Sinbad embark on the central adventure of the story when they discover a map leading to a fabulous treasure and decide to pursue it.
Ali’s personality is characterized by his cleverness, bravery, and a spirited sense of mischief. The adventure begins with him and Sinbad stowing away aboard a transport ship called the Boulder, hiding inside a jar to secure passage. Once discovered, his quick thinking and charm help him and Sinbad win the favor of the ship’s captain, Hamdi, allowing them to earn their proper places on the crew. Ali is notably younger than many of the other crew members, which is highlighted in a lighthearted scene where he laughs at a much larger sailor named Abdullah after he accidentally cuts his finger while slicing potatoes.
Ali’s primary motivation is the spirit of adventure and the pursuit of treasure. His role in the story is crucial as both a helper and a catalyst for key events. When the group is imprisoned by the evil minister Torfa in a seaside kingdom, Ali manages to evade capture. He demonstrates remarkable agility and resourcefulness by scaling the castle walls, evading the minister’s guards, and finding Princess Samir, who is being held against her will. After the princess frees Sinbad and the others, Ali effects his own daring escape using a magical flying feather, a device that serves as a counterpart to the more famous flying carpet.
The relationships Ali forms are central to the narrative. His bond with Sinbad is one of deep mutual trust and care, with Sinbad repeatedly going out of his way to ensure Ali’s safety throughout their perilous journey. Ali also shares a warm and trusting friendship with Princess Samir. On the ship, Samir confides in Ali when she feels isolated, and they share joyful moments together, such as dancing and listening to music. The pair also share a tender moment bidding farewell to a young whale that had been on the ship, a memory Samir later writes about in a letter to her family.
Throughout the film, Ali demonstrates notable abilities and contributes directly to the crew’s survival. Beyond his physical skills in climbing and evasion, he shows keen observational skills. During a dangerous storm, he helps Sinbad save the ship from capsizing, with Sinbad using Ali’s knife to cut a critical rope. Later, when the ship is stranded and seemingly unable to move, it is Ali who first notices that a pod of whales, possibly returning a favor for the rescue of one of their young, has begun nudging the ship back into motion. He also serves as an extra set of eyes in treacherous conditions, such as pointing out a dangerous rock that Sinbad must steer the ship away from while blinded by thick fog. When the ship finally crashes on Treasure Island, Sinbad’s immediate concern is calling out for Ali, underscoring his importance to the hero. Ultimately, Ali’s journey brings him full circle to the treasure, as he and Samir are the ones who encounter the evil minister Torfa inside the treasure cave, leading to a final confrontation where Sinbad arrives to protect them.
