Description
Mimika is a high-leveled player character who existed in the online game The World approximately two years before the events of the series.hack//Sign. Unlike most characters, Mimika was controlled by three female high school students who decided to share a single account because none of them believed they could individually build a character strong enough to reach the high level they wanted. They felt that pooling their efforts into one character would make that character more meaningful than any single character they could create alone. Mimika operated as the first mentor to the player character Mimiru, guiding her through quests and events early in Mimiru's journey. The character was motivated primarily by a desire to receive the gratitude of other players. This desire drove her actions in the game, and she ultimately demonstrated it in a final act of sacrifice: when Mimiru and a friend were threatened by a powerful monster, Mimika used a special skill that crystallized her own character's body to deal massive damage to the enemy. The defeated monster fell onto the crystallized Mimika, corrupting her character data and effectively destroying her. Her crystalline remains could still be seen in that dungeon afterward. The three girls controlling Mimika had already agreed among themselves that they would stop playing The World once they graduated from high school, and after Mimika's in-game death they upheld that agreement and never played again. The story of Mimika, as shown in the OVA.hack//Intermezzo, focuses on the relationship between Mimika and Mimiru and how that mentorship helped Mimiru understand the deeper meaning of the game beyond simple gameplay. Mimika was a notably powerful character for the time, having reached a high level relatively early in the game's lifespan, and her crystallization ability was a unique and devastating technique. Her legacy remained in the memories of those she helped and as a visible monument in the dungeon where she fell.
