Patrick Zala is a political leader of the PLANT nation in the Cosmic Era setting of Mobile Suit Gundam Seed and its Special Edition compilation, where he serves as one of the central figures driving the conflict between Coordinators and Naturals. He begins the story as a member of the PLANT Supreme Council and chairman of the ZAFT Defense Committee, and later becomes the chairman of the Supreme Council itself. He is the father of Athrun Zala, and his personal history and political ideology are closely tied to the war that defines the series.
Born in Cosmic Era 32, Patrick Zala rose through PLANT politics at a time when Coordinators lived under the threat of persecution from Naturals. Even after these strikes, Patrick is enraged that the Alliance continues to fight, and he orders GENESIS to be aimed directly at the Atlantic Federation capital, Washington, an act that would wipe out countless lives on the planet's surface. In his final moments, after being shot by Yuki, he is found by Athrun, and his dying wish is for his son to fire GENESIS and create a world for Coordinators. Athrun refuses and instead detonates the Justice mobile suit inside the superweapon, destroying it. Patrick's body is subsequently annihilated when the Jachin Due station explodes, and his death ends the era of extremist leadership within PLANT, after which Eileen Canaver assumes leadership and opens negotiations with the Alliance.
