Kinryū Arimoto
Description
Kinryū Arimoto was a Japanese actor and voice actor born Yoshitaka Arimoto on February 11, 1940 in Tottori Prefecture, Japan. He was active in the entertainment industry from 1963 until 2018 and was formerly employed by Production Baobab. Arimoto also practiced kenpo, earning the black belt rank of shodan. A kanji mistranslation of his birth name led to his name being read as Kinryū, which he adopted as his stage name. He passed away on February 1, 2019 in Tokyo at the age of 78 due to esophageal cancer.
Beyond his performance work, Arimoto was active as a trainer of younger voice actors. From 1996 to 2001, he trained talents including Sakiko Tamagawa, Tomokazu Seki, and Tange Sakura. From 2002 to 2004, he worked with Sōichirō Hoshi, Kotono Mitsuishi, Takehito Koyasu, Hōko Kuwashima, Kenichi Suzumura, Maaya Sakamoto, and Akira Ishida, among others. In 2011, he trained voice actors such as Mamoru Miyano, Yoshimasa Hosoya, and Megumi Hayashibara.
Arimoto built an extensive filmography across television animation, theatrical films, original video animations, and video games. In television anime, he was known for the role of Tomomi Masaoka in Psycho-Pass, Edward Newgate, also known as Whitebeard, in One Piece, and Isshin Matoi in Kill la Kill. He voiced Szilard Quates in Baccano!, Director Kakuzawa in Elfen Lied, Ryōma Kurogane in Chivalry of a Failed Knight, Seigō Hibiki across the Inazuma Eleven franchise, Professor Saotome in New Getter Robo, Azi Dahaka in Future Card Buddyfight Triple D, and Patrick Zala in Mobile Suit Gundam Seed and its special editions. He also appeared as Richard Guyot in Guyver: The Bioboosted Armor, Oburi in Kite, Raizō Nakajima in Macross Zero, Master Li in Angel Heart, Ye in Souten no Ken, Adam in In The Beginning - The Bible Stories, and Chief Nogami in City Hunter. Other notable television roles included Hajime Wataya in Chihayafuru, Cameo in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders, and Eddie Jay in Space Brothers. In the 1990s, his work included Bogard in Tekkaman Blade, Freddie in Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair, and roles in Mobile Suit Victory Gundam, Mobile Fighter G Gundam, Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, Trigun, Gasaraki, and Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040.
In theatrical animation, his film credits included Ken Kogashiwa in Initial D Third Stage, Admiral Hibiki in Inazuma Eleven: Saikyō Gundan Ogre Shūrai, Eddie Jay in Space Brothers #0, and he reprised his role as Tomomi Masaoka in Psycho-Pass: Sinners of the System. He also appeared in Detective Conan: Strategy Above the Depths, Mardock Scramble, and as Ricardo Marcenas in Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn. For original video animations, he voiced Ushio Fuzuchi in Eight Clouds Rising, Robert Hardy in Golgo 13: Queen Bee, Goutetsu in Street Fighter Alpha: Generations, and Iga Tokuhiro in Blue Submarine No. 6.
Arimoto was also prolific in video game voice work, providing the Japanese dub for Carl Manfred in Detroit: Become Human. He voiced Galcian in Skies of Arcadia, the President in Sonic Adventure 2, Duke Juda Ronwey in Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, Kazan in Legaia 2: Duel Saga, and Dōman Ashiya in Kuon. In dubbing for live-action foreign films and television, he was the regular Japanese voice for actors including Christopher Walken, Jeremy Irons, Dennis Farina, and Jonathan Banks, the latter as Mike Ehrmantraut in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. His dubbing work also included roles in Forrest Gump as Lieutenant Dan Taylor, Interstellar as Professor Brand, Gandhi, Die Hard with a Vengeance, and The Exorcist: Director's Cut.
